Description
Livia Fontana Barolo Bussia Riserva 2019 is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most admired cru sites. Sourced from the prestigious Bussia area in Monforte d’Alba, it combines power, precision, and unmistakable Piedmont character, with the depth and structure expected from a serious Riserva. Historically, Bussia has been associated with some of the most age-worthy and celebrated Barolos, making this a wine with both pedigree and long-term appeal.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a garnet-red color with the brick-toned reflections that are characteristic of well-built Nebbiolo. The bouquet is layered and refined, offering notes of dried cherry, rose petal, red currant, licorice, violets, and earthy hints of truffle, tobacco, and spice.
On the palate, expect a structured, savory wine with firm yet polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. The fruit is supported by floral and woodland nuances, giving the wine both elegance and intensity. As a Riserva, it is built for patience and should develop beautifully over many years, gaining complexity and finesse with bottle age.
Production
This wine comes from Bussia, a highly regarded hillside cru in the Barolo zone of Piedmont, where limestone-rich marl soils and an elevated, well-exposed terroir help Nebbiolo ripen slowly and evenly. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity to preserve the grape’s aromatic precision and natural acidity. Vinification follows a traditional Barolo approach aimed at extracting fine tannins and depth while preserving the elegance and aging potential that define great Nebbiolo.
Food & Serving
Barolo Bussia Riserva is an excellent match for rich, flavorful dishes such as braised beef, game, truffle risotto, slow-cooked lamb, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno. Serve at around 16–18°C to allow the aromatics and structure to unfold fully. Decanting for at least 1–2 hours is recommended, especially when the wine is young, to soften the tannins and open the bouquet.
