Description
Lionel Osmin & Cie’s Les Villas Villa des Causses Malbec 2022 showcases the character of one of southwest France’s most distinctive red grapes. Made by a négociant-producer devoted exclusively to the region’s wines, it reflects the long-standing connection between Malbec and the inland vineyards around Cahors, where the variety has been cultivated for centuries.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, this Malbec is expected to offer an inviting nose of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by subtle violet and gently spicy notes. On the palate, it combines generous dark-fruit flavour with Malbec’s characteristic freshness and softly firm tannins, finishing with a savoury, earthy edge.
The 2022 vintage should be enjoyed for its youthful fruit and approachable structure, while the wine may gain additional complexity over the next few years if stored in a cool, dark cellar. It is best appreciated within approximately three to five years of the vintage.
Production
The wine is made from Malbec grown in the southwest of France, a region where Atlantic influence brings cooler, more humid conditions than many other French wine areas. Lionel Osmin & Cie works with vineyards using increasingly organic methods, with the long-term aim of eliminating residual products. Specific information about the harvesting and vinification methods for this cuvée is not provided, but the producer’s approach is centred on expressing the character of local varieties and their regional terroir.
Food & Serving
Serve this full-flavoured red at around 16–18°C. It is a natural partner for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, duck, sausages, cassoulet and hearty vegetarian dishes featuring lentils, mushrooms or aubergine. Decanting is not essential for the 2022 vintage, although 20–30 minutes in a decanter can help open the wine and soften its youthful tannins.
Producer
Founded with a strong focus on the wines of southwest France, Lionel Osmin & Cie produces and selects wines from areas including Jurançon, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Cahors, Gaillac and Bergerac, as well as Armagnac. The company is particularly committed to the region’s native grape varieties and to environmentally responsible viticulture. In 2010, it launched an ambitious tree-planting programme; by the end of 2018, almost 43,000 trees had been replanted across more than 40 hectares, including areas connected with the restoration of the Landes forest.
