Description
Lionel Osmin & Cie Le Conservatoire Prunelard 2024 is a distinctive red wine made from 100% Prunelard, one of South-West France’s rare indigenous grape varieties. Considered a historical ancestor of Malbec, Prunelard delivers an expressive combination of dark fruit, freshness and elegance, showcasing the character of the Contreforts Albigeois.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in the glass, this wine opens with an intense and refined bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, violet and black cherry. Subtle notes of black pepper, Mediterranean herbs and spice add complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
The palate is juicy and powerful, yet finely balanced by lively freshness and silky tannins. Dark fruit and spice carry through to a long, elegant finish. It is delicious in its youth, when its freshness and fruit are particularly vibrant, and should develop additional savoury complexity over the next few years if stored carefully.
Production
The Prunelard grapes come from limestone- and clay-rich slopes in the Contreforts Albigeois, a terroir that helps preserve freshness while giving the wine depth and structure. The cuvée is made entirely from Prunelard as part of Lionel Osmin & Cie’s Le Conservatoire project, which is dedicated to protecting the region’s heritage varieties. Specific harvesting and vinification details are not provided, but the finished wine combines concentrated fruit with polished tannins and a distinctly fresh profile.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly cool, ideally at 16–18°C. The wine is a natural match for grilled beef, duck breast, lamb and game birds, while its savoury character also complements mushroom dishes, mature cheeses and grilled Camembert. Decanting is not essential for immediate enjoyment, but 30–45 minutes in a decanter can help open the aromas and soften the wine’s structure, particularly when served young.
Producer
Lionel Osmin & Cie is a specialist négociant and wine producer devoted exclusively to the distinctive wines of South-West France, with projects spanning Jurançon, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Cahors, Gaillac and Bergerac, as well as Armagnac. The company works with local grape varieties and aims to farm as organically as possible, despite the cool, humid Atlantic influence of the region. In 2010, Lionel Osmin & Cie launched an ambitious reforestation programme; by the end of 2018, nearly 43,000 trees had been planted across more than 40 hectares, including areas of the Landes forest affected by severe storms.
