Description
Lionel Osmin & Cie Le Conservatoire Ondenc 2023 is a distinctive white wine made from 100% Ondenc, one of the rarest historic white grape varieties of South-West France. Once widely planted in Tarn, Ondenc nearly disappeared before being championed again by Lionel Osmin & Cie, whose Le Conservatoire range is dedicated to preserving the region’s forgotten grape varieties. The result is an elegant, gastronomic wine that combines ripe fruit, creamy texture and lively freshness.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden-yellow in appearance, the wine offers a refined and complex nose of candied pear, ripe apple and lemon zest, complemented by notes of brioche and a subtle hint of orange peel. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rounded, with vibrant acidity, gentle creaminess and a polished mineral character that brings balance and definition.
The finish is long, fresh and distinctly gastronomic, making this a particularly versatile white wine at the table. Its combination of acidity, structure and fruit suggests that it will drink beautifully in its youth, while gaining additional complexity over the short to medium term when carefully stored.
Production
The Ondenc vines grow in limestone- and clay-rich soils, which help create a balance between aromatic richness and refined freshness. The wine is produced from 100% Ondenc, though specific details regarding harvesting methods, fermentation and maturation have not been provided. Its style reflects the distinctive character of South-West France, where Atlantic influences contribute to a cooler, more humid climate and help preserve freshness in the grapes.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Its rounded texture and lively acidity make it an excellent match for freshwater fish, veal, poultry, creamy risotto and rabbit terrine. It also pairs especially well with mature sheep’s cheeses and Parmesan. Decanting is not essential, but allowing the wine a little time in the glass can help its layered aromas and subtle brioche character unfold.
Producer
Lionel Osmin & Cie is a specialist négociant and producer devoted exclusively to the wines and spirits of South-West France. Its portfolio spans appellations including Jurançon, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Cahors, Gaillac and Bergerac, alongside a range of Armagnac. The company places strong emphasis on sustainable vineyard practices and the preservation of local grape varieties. Since launching an ambitious tree-planting programme in 2010, Lionel Osmin & Cie has also contributed to the restoration of the Landes forest and storm-affected landscapes; by the end of 2018, nearly 43,000 trees had been replanted across more than 40 hectares.
