Description

Lionel Osmin & Cie’s Coeur de Malbec is a modern expression of Cahors, a historic appellation long celebrated for its deeply coloured “black wines.” Made from the region’s signature Malbec, it combines the variety’s naturally generous fruit and dark colour with the freshness and structure typical of the Lot Valley. The 2023 vintage offers an approachable introduction to this characterful corner of southwest France.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour with violet reflections. On the nose, it reveals aromas of ripe blackberry, black plum and blueberry, complemented by subtle violet, spice and earthy notes. The palate is full-bodied yet balanced, with concentrated dark fruit, refreshing acidity and firm but polished tannins. A savoury, gently spicy finish adds further complexity. It can be enjoyed young for its fruit-forward character, while careful cellaring over the next five to eight years should allow the tannins to soften and the earthy nuances to develop.

Production
The wine comes from Cahors, where Malbec thrives in a continental-influenced inland setting moderated by Atlantic weather patterns. The combination of sunlight, cooler conditions and the stony, alluvial soils found along the Lot contributes both ripeness and freshness. Lionel Osmin & Cie works with an emphasis on sustainable, increasingly low-input vineyard practices, aiming to reduce residual treatments wherever possible. Specific harvesting and vinification details are not provided, but the wine is crafted to express the dark-fruited, structured style for which Cahors is known.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Coeur de Malbec is a natural match for grilled or slow-cooked red meats, duck, lamb, cassoulet, sausages and hearty dishes featuring lentils or mushrooms. Its tannic structure also works well with rich regional cuisine and mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential for the 2023 vintage, but 30–45 minutes in a decanter can help open the aromas and soften the wine’s youthful tannins.

Producer
Lionel Osmin & Cie is a specialist négociant and producer devoted exclusively to the wines and spirits of southwest France. Its portfolio spans distinctive appellations including Jurançon, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Cahors, Gaillac and Bergerac, alongside a range of Armagnac. The company has placed sustainability at the centre of its work, with vineyards farmed as organically as possible and a long-term goal of eliminating residual treatments. Since 2010, its ambitious tree-planting programme has also supported the restoration of the Landes forest; by the end of 2018, nearly 43,000 trees had been replanted across more than 40 hectares.
