Description

L'IF 2018 in magnum format is a modern Saint-Émilion of real pedigree, crafted from a meticulous blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Sourced from prime Right Bank terroir and matured in French barriques, it delivers the depth and refinement you’d expect from one of Bordeaux’s most sought‑after boutique estates. The 2018 vintage in Bordeaux is widely celebrated for its concentration and balance, and L’IF captures that character in an especially luxurious, ageworthy expression.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, L'IF 2018 shows a deep, almost opaque purple-black hue that hints at its intensity and youth. The nose is wonderfully seductive, opening with ripe, baked raspberries and mulberries, followed by notes of Black Forest gateau, hints of rosehip, fragrant earth, and a touch of dusty minerality. As it evolves in the glass, subtler layers of cocoa, sweet spice, and a faint floral lift emerge. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and plush, with a core of generous red and black fruits wrapped in velvety, finely polished tannins. The Merlot brings opulence and ripe plum and raspberry tones, while the Cabernet Franc adds structure, freshness, and a delicate herbal-spice complexity. Flavours of dark chocolate, licorice, and baking spices echo through the long, gently warming finish. With its vibrant acidity and well‑integrated 14.5% alcohol, this 2018 has the balance and structure to age gracefully for 15–20 years or more, particularly in magnum.

Production
L'IF 2018 is crafted from a blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc grown on the limestone and clay-limestone slopes of Saint‑Émilion, a terroir renowned for producing poised yet powerful Right Bank wines. The vineyard is farmed with great attention to detail, with careful bunch selection and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve purity and balance. After a rigorous sorting, the grapes are vinified parcel by parcel, allowing each plot’s character to shine. The wine is then aged for 12–16 months in French oak barriques, about 50% of which are new, bringing subtle spice, polish, and textural richness without overwhelming the fruit. A pH of 3.55 underlines its freshness and contributes to its impressive aging potential.

Food & Serving
L'IF 2018 is a natural partner for refined, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry‑aged ribeye, venison with a red wine reduction, or classic French fare like duck breast and truffle-infused poultry. It also pairs beautifully with earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, root vegetables, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Ossau‑Iraty. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in magnum, the wine benefits from a 1–2 hour decant when young to fully open its aromatic profile and soften the tannins. As it matures, a shorter decant of 30–45 minutes will be sufficient to let the wine unfurl.

Producer
L’IF is the Saint‑Émilion outpost of the famed Thienpont family, best known for the legendary Pomerol estate Le Pin. Located on the limestone plateau just outside the medieval village of Saint‑Émilion, L’IF has quickly established itself as one of the appellation’s most exciting, small‑scale producers, marrying meticulous vineyard work with precision winemaking. Since its acquisition and redevelopment, the estate has focused on expressing its exceptional terroir through low yields, careful parcel selection, and sensitive oak use. Although still relatively young in name, L’IF is already recognized by critics and collectors as a rising star on the Right Bank, producing limited‑production wines of great finesse, intensity, and aging potential.
