Description
Licht-Bergweiler Erben’s Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1959 is a rare Mosel treasure from one of Germany’s most revered vineyard sites. Made from hand-selected Riesling grapes affected by noble rot, it captures the hallmarks of great dessert wine: intensity, precision, and remarkable longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden color that speaks to its age and concentration. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with ripe peach, apricot, honey, and a delicate citrus lift, while the palate is rich, full-bodied, and beautifully balanced by vibrant acidity. A subtle mineral thread carries through the long, persistent finish, giving the wine a sense of elegance and freshness despite its sweetness.
As with the finest Trockenbeerenauslese wines, its structure and concentration suggest extraordinary aging potential; even at this stage, it remains a captivating wine for collectors and special occasions.
Production
This wine comes from the steep slate slopes of Brauneberger Juffer in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, where cool-climate conditions and mineral-rich soils help Riesling develop its classic purity and finesse. The grapes were harvested by hand in extremely selective passes, with only the shriveled, botrytized berries chosen for production. Vinification would have been carried out with great care to preserve the wine’s natural sweetness, acidity, and aromatic complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 8–10°C. It pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, blue cheese, or fine pâté, and can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a short period in the glass can help the aromas open fully.
Producer
Licht-Bergweiler Erben is associated with the Mosel tradition of producing finely detailed Riesling wines from prestigious vineyard sites. While historical details on the estate are limited here, the combination of the Brauneberger Juffer vineyard and a 1959 Trockenbeerenauslese points to a producer working at the highest level of German sweet-wine craftsmanship. Such wines are a testament to the region’s long-standing reputation for exceptional Riesling.
