Description

Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2018 is one of the most distinctive reds to emerge from Bordeaux in this remarkable vintage, marrying classic Pessac-Léognan elegance with a boldly modern touch. Crafted from 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot, it showcases whole-cluster fermentation (52%) and an innovative élevage in new oak, large foudres and amphora. Sitting just outside the historic cradle of Haut-Brion, this estate has rapidly risen to cult status, admired by critics like Robert Parker’s team for its finesse, energy and aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Les Carmes Haut-Brion shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple hue that hints at both concentration and freshness. The nose unfurls slowly at first, then opens in dramatic fashion with layers of blackberry preserves, blackcurrant jelly and mulberry, followed by notes reminiscent of Black Forest cake. Savory and mineral tones weave through the dark fruit: graphite pencil shavings, black truffle, warm cast-iron and charcoal, lifted by a subtle floral edge of violet. On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet intensely flavored, with a graceful, almost dancing texture. Red and black berries interplay with cocoa, sweet spices and a marked mineral streak, while the whole-cluster component brings a subtle herbal savor and fine-grained, slightly stemmy tannins that add shape and complexity. The structure is firm but polished, supported by lively acidity that keeps the wine precise and energetic. The finish is long, savory and mouthwatering, promising a long life ahead. Though already impressive, this 2018 will benefit from 5–6 more years of cellaring for the tannins to fully integrate, and it has the substance and balance to evolve beautifully for 30+ years in a good cellar.

Production
Les Carmes Haut-Brion lies on the gravelly, sand-and-clay terraces of Pessac-Léognan, just outside Bordeaux city, in an area famed for producing some of the world’s most complex, long-lived reds. The vineyard benefits from deep gravel mixed with clay and iron-rich subsoils, which contribute both aromatic lift and mineral tension to the wines. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and terroir expression. In 2018, 52% whole clusters were used in the fermentations, a bold choice in Bordeaux that adds aromatic complexity and a distinctive tannin profile. The wine was then aged in a careful mix of 75% new French oak barriques, 16% large-format foudres and 9% amphorae, a combination that brings texture and depth while avoiding excessive oak imprint and retaining purity of fruit and minerality.

Food & Serving
This refined yet powerful Pessac-Léognan is a natural partner for high-quality, simply prepared meat dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, venison, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with earthy dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles, root vegetables and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and freshness. For current drinking, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the bouquet and tannins to fully open; from maturity onward, 1–2 hours of decanting will be sufficient to reveal its layered character.

Producer
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion traces its origins back to the 16th century, when the land was owned by the Carmelite monks who gave the estate its name. Situated in Pessac-Léognan, close to the iconic Château Haut-Brion, it occupies one of the most privileged terroirs in the Graves, yet for many years it remained something of an insider’s secret. Under visionary recent ownership and the guidance of winemaker Guillaume Pouthier, Les Carmes Haut-Brion has embraced precision viticulture and cutting-edge yet sensitive winemaking, including whole-cluster fermentation and mixed vessel aging. The estate has rapidly gained recognition as one of Bordeaux’s most exciting, avant-garde producers, regularly earning top critical acclaim and a devoted following among collectors who prize its unique combination of perfume, finesse and longevity.
