Description

Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2014 is a refined and quietly confident Pessac-Léognan, offering a modern expression of Bordeaux elegance framed by classic structure. Sourced from one of the region’s most distinctive urban estates, this wine marries ripe, seductive fruit with serious depth and freshness. Its unique identity lies in a Cabernet Franc–led blend, lending aromatic lift and finesse that sets it apart from many of its neighbors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Les Carmes Haut-Brion shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful sheen, hinting at its concentration and energy. The nose is expressive and layered: ripe red cherry and wild strawberry intermingle with fig, blood orange zest, and subtle floral notes, supported by hints of graphite, tar, and well-judged oak spice. On the palate, it is medium to medium-plus in body with a silken, caressing texture and fine-grained, ripe tannins. Juicy red cherry, raspberry, and blackberry fruit sit at the core, wrapped in tones of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and a gentle smokiness that nods to its Pessac-Léognan roots. The finish is polished and persistent, with fresh acidity keeping everything precise and lifted. While already approachable with a decant, this vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining complexity and savory nuance with time in bottle.

Production
Les Carmes Haut-Brion lies on the gravelly terraces of Pessac-Léognan, just outside the city of Bordeaux, where deep gravel, sand, and clay over limestone provide excellent drainage and encourage vines to root deeply. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work, with careful hand-harvesting parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. The blend is centered on Cabernet Franc, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which is relatively unusual on the Left Bank and contributes to its aromatic profile. Fermentation typically takes place in a combination of stainless steel, concrete, and wooden vats, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity while preserving its purity of fruit and mineral backbone.

Food & Serving
This 2014 Les Carmes Haut-Brion pairs beautifully with classic roasted or grilled meats such as lamb, veal, or beef, as well as duck breast, game birds, and dishes featuring earthy elements like mushrooms or truffles. It also complements hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. At this stage of its life, a 60–90 minute decant is recommended to help the tannins relax and allow the bouquet to fully open.

Producer
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion traces its origins back to the 16th century, when the land was owned by the Carmelite monks—hence the name “Carmes.” Situated in Pessac-Léognan and historically linked by proximity and style to the famed Haut-Brion estates, it has long been regarded as one of the appellation’s most characterful and individual properties. In recent years, substantial investment in both the vineyards and a striking, state-of-the-art winery has elevated its reputation, with critics increasingly recognizing Les Carmes Haut-Brion for its distinctive Cabernet Franc–driven style, finesse, and aging capacity. Today it stands as one of the most exciting and talked-about producers in Graves, noted for combining tradition with innovative, precision winemaking.
