Description

Château Léoville Poyferré is one of Saint-Julien’s most admired estates, offering the depth and precision expected of a 2ème Grand Cru Classé. The 2023 vintage reflects the estate’s signature style: polished, powerful, and elegantly structured, with the balance and refinement that have made this property a benchmark on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.

Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep ruby-purple colour, hinting at concentration and freshness in the glass. Aromas lean toward blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, cedar, graphite, and subtle spice, with the kind of lifted complexity that makes Saint-Julien so appealing. On the palate, expect a layered wine with ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a composed, muscular frame. The finish is usually long and persistent, with excellent harmony between power and finesse. While approachable in its youth with decanting, this is a wine built to evolve beautifully over time and should gain further complexity with cellaring.

Production
Leoville Poyferré sits in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s gravel-rich Left Bank, where the well-drained soils and proximity to the Gironde help create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon-led blends. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then vinified with a focus on precision and gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit and structure.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game, or rich mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open and soften.

Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré traces its roots back to the historic Léoville estate, one of the great names of Bordeaux before being divided into separate properties. Today it remains a reference point in Saint-Julien, known for producing wines of consistency, depth, and elegance, and for regularly earning high critical acclaim among the Left Bank’s finest estates.
