Description
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the standout names of Saint-Julien, offering the kind of precision, depth and polish that collectors expect from a historic Bordeaux Second Growth. The 2023 vintage continues the estate’s reputation for combining Cabernet-driven structure with impressive richness and refinement, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a classic left-bank wine with modern appeal.
Tasting Notes
At this early stage, the wine is likely to show a deep ruby-purple color with excellent concentration and brightness. Aromas typically lean toward blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, violet and subtle spice, with the signature Saint-Julien balance of elegance and power. On the palate, expect firm but polished tannins, layered dark fruit, savory mineral notes and a long, structured finish. The 2023 has strong aging potential and should reward patience over many years in cellar.
Production
Sourced from the gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, the vineyard benefits from excellent drainage and the moderating influence of the nearby Gironde estuary, conditions that favor slow, even ripening. Harvesting is typically carried out parcel by parcel to capture optimal maturity, with vinification designed to preserve purity, concentration and terroir expression through careful temperature control and aging in French oak.
Food & Serving
Best served at 16–18°C, this wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, game dishes and hard cheeses. A few hours of decanting is recommended in its youth to help the wine open and soften its tannins, especially if enjoyed before extended cellar aging.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the historic estates of Bordeaux’s Left Bank and was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. Located in Saint-Julien, the property has earned a strong reputation for producing wines of depth, consistency and finesse, and is widely respected among collectors for its reliable quality and age-worthy style.
