Description
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of Saint-Julien’s most admired second growths, known for combining power, polish, and remarkable balance. The 2022 vintage reflects the estate’s signature style: deeply structured, richly layered Bordeaux with the finesse and pedigree expected from one of the Médoc’s historic names.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is typically dark and concentrated, with a vivid ruby-purple core that hints at its depth and intensity. The nose opens with blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, cedar, and graphite, supported by subtle spice, tobacco, and toasted oak notes.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and tightly composed, with ripe dark fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that keep everything lifted and precise. The finish is long and persistent, with mineral and savory nuances that suggest excellent aging potential; this is a wine that should evolve beautifully over the next 15 to 25 years, gaining complexity and softness with time.
Production
The estate lies in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils and excellent drainage help Cabernet Sauvignon and its supporting varieties ripen with concentration and freshness. The vineyard benefit from the maritime climate of the Médoc, while careful parcel selection and precision harvesting ensure grapes are picked at optimal maturity. Vinification is typically carried out with meticulous temperature control and aging in French oak to build structure, aromatic complexity, and long-term harmony.
Food & Serving
This is a classic match for premium beef, lamb, duck, truffle dishes, and rich mushroom-based preparations. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1 to 2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open and show its full aromatic depth.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré traces its history back to the legendary Léoville estate, one of the great names of Bordeaux before being divided in the 19th century. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has earned a strong reputation in Saint-Julien for producing wines of consistency, concentration, and elegance. Under modern ownership and investment, the estate has become a benchmark for refined Left Bank Bordeaux and is widely respected for its ambitious, highly regarded vintages.
