Description
Leoville Poyferré is one of Saint-Julien’s most admired names, offering the depth and precision expected of a 2ème Grand Cru Classé. The 2021 vintage reflects the estate’s signature style: refined, structured, and classically Bordeaux, with the pedigree and consistency that have made it a benchmark on the Left Bank.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep ruby-purple color with excellent clarity and concentration. The bouquet is layered and elegant, with dark cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and subtle floral notes, often supported by hints of tobacco, spice, and finely integrated oak.
On the palate, it is usually medium to full-bodied with firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. The 2021 vintage suggests a more restrained, graceful profile than riper years, with good aging potential and the ability to develop further complexity over the next 10–20 years, depending on cellaring conditions.
Production
Produced in the Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, the wine comes from gravelly soils that promote excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve fine structure and aromatic lift. Harvesting is typically carried out parcel by parcel to preserve precision and allow each plot to be picked at optimal ripeness.
Vinification is carried out with careful temperature control and plot selection, followed by maturation in oak barrels to build texture, depth, and complexity while retaining freshness and balance. The estate’s approach emphasizes classical Bordeaux elegance, with meticulous vineyard work and cellar precision shaping the final blend.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or game dishes, as well as mushroom-based recipes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if enjoyed young, to help the wine open and show its full aromatic range.
Producer
Leoville Poyferré is part of the historic Léoville legacy, one of the great estates of Saint-Julien, and has long been recognized among Bordeaux’s elite properties. As a 2ème Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 Classification, it holds an important place in the region’s winemaking history and is known for producing wines of consistency, elegance, and longevity. The estate has earned a strong reputation for combining traditional Left Bank character with impressive precision and quality in recent decades.
