Description

Léoville Las Cases 2021 is a benchmark Saint-Julien, capturing the precision and classical elegance that have made this estate one of Bordeaux’s most revered names. Already hailed by critics as one of the finest wines of the vintage, it marries depth, structure and purity in a wine built for both contemplation and long-term cellaring. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers the sort of refinement and energy that define great Left Bank claret in a cooler, more timeless style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Léoville Las Cases shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is intensely focused yet beautifully layered, unfolding with dark berries and cassis alongside notes of cigar box, crushed violets, graphite and freshly shaved pencil. Subtle undertones of cedar, tobacco leaf and a touch of dark chocolate emerge with air, adding complexity without ever feeling heavy. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, precise and tightly coiled, with a deep, multi-dimensional core of blackcurrant and blackberry framed by beautifully refined, fine-grained tannins. The lively acidity gives the wine lift and tension, driving a long, penetrating finish that lingers with notes of cassis, graphite and a gentle savory minerality. Serious and structured without being austere, it shows remarkable balance and poise. While already impressive in its youth, this 2021 is clearly built for the long haul and should evolve gracefully for 20–30 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Léoville Las Cases draws its fruit from some of the finest terroir in Saint-Julien, including the famed walled Clos adjoining the northern edge of Léoville and facing the Gironde estuary. Deep gravel soils over clay and limestone provide excellent drainage and naturally low yields, encouraging small, concentrated berries with superb Cabernet character. The 2021 is a blend of roughly 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, harvested by hand parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. After an exacting selection both in the vineyard and at the winery, the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for a gentle, precise extraction of color, tannin and aromatics. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a high proportion of them new, where it matures on its fine lees to gain additional texture, polish and aromatic complexity before bottling.

Food & Serving
This is a classic wine for refined, savory dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with duck, truffled poultry, wild mushrooms, or mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to unfurl its layers; as it gains age in bottle, 1–2 hours of gentle aeration will generally be sufficient.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates and a leading Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) from the 1855 Classification, widely considered to perform at a level rivaling many First Growths. Located in Saint-Julien, the property represents the largest and most historic portion of the original Léoville estate, with a winemaking heritage dating back to the 17th century. Over the last several decades, Léoville Las Cases has built a formidable reputation for producing some of the most long-lived and profound Cabernet-based wines on the Left Bank, celebrated for their precision, structure and terroir expression. Its consistency across challenging and great vintages alike has secured its status as a reference point for collectors and lovers of classic Bordeaux worldwide.
