Description

Bottled in majestic magnum format, the 2000 Léoville Las Cases is one of the iconic wines of a legendary Bordeaux vintage. Sourced from one of the most revered estates in Saint-Julien, this wine is a benchmark for classical, ageworthy Left Bank Bordeaux. In magnum, its evolution is even more graceful, promising extraordinary complexity and longevity for collectors and serious enthusiasts alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2000 Léoville Las Cases shows a deep, opaque garnet core with just a hint of brick at the rim, reflecting its slow, noble evolution. The nose is intense yet tightly woven at first, gradually unfurling with air to reveal layers of blackcurrant, black cherry and red plum alongside notes of pencil shavings, cigar box, cedar, clay earth, and graphite. More subtle nuances of bitter chocolate, dried rose petals, licorice and a touch of tobacco add real aromatic depth. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and supremely structured, with a beautifully layered mid-palate that is rare even in this outstanding vintage. The dark berry and red fruit core is wrapped in fine, powdery tannins and vibrant acidity, giving the wine both power and precision. Savory elements—cedar, graphite, cocoa, and a faint gamey note—are carried through a long, resonant finish. Despite its age, the 2000 Las Cases in magnum is still youthful in evolution and has a long life ahead; it will continue to develop and gain tertiary complexity over the next 10–20+ years when properly cellared.

Production
Léoville Las Cases is drawn from one of the greatest terroirs in the Médoc, effectively forming a natural amphitheater bordering the Gironde estuary at the northern end of Saint-Julien, opposite the vineyards of Latour in Pauillac. The deep gravel soils over clay and sand, combined with the moderating influence of the river, provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen fully while retaining freshness. The grand vin is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, all sourced from old vines meticulously tended and harvested by hand. After rigorous sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where the wine matures on its fine lees. This traditional yet uncompromising approach to vinification and aging is designed to craft a wine of great density, precision and longevity, especially evident in top vintages such as 2000.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that shines alongside refined, richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, game birds, or slow-braised beef and veal. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushrooms, and hard or semi-firm cheeses such as Comté, aged Gruyère or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its complexity and structure. Given its youthfulness in magnum, decanting for at least 2–3 hours is recommended, and even longer for those who prefer the tannins to soften and the full aromatic spectrum to emerge.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux’s historic aristocrats, classified as a Second Growth in 1855 but widely regarded as a “super second” with quality that often rivals the First Growths. The estate traces its roots back to the 17th century and once formed part of the vast Léoville domain before being divided into several châteaux. Today, it is considered the reference point for Saint-Julien’s power and classicism, known for producing some of the longest-lived wines of the Médoc. Under the long-term stewardship of the Delon family, Léoville Las Cases has earned a reputation for precision, rigor in the vineyard and cellar, and for crafting wines that define the character of the Left Bank in great vintages such as 2000.
