Description
Château Léoville Barton 2001 is a classic Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Second Growth estates, offering the poise, structure, and longevity that have made the property a benchmark for the appellation. Known for its traditional style and Cabernet Sauvignon-led precision, it’s a wine that reflects both the pedigree of the left bank and the estate’s long-standing commitment to quality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep garnet core with mature ruby highlights at the rim, hinting at its evolution while retaining good concentration. Aromatically, it tends toward blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and dried herbs, with subtle earthy and leather tones emerging with age. On the palate, expect a medium-to-full-bodied wine with firm but polished tannins, balanced acidity, and layers of dark fruit, cassis, spice, and savory complexity.
The 2001 vintage is now at a lovely stage of maturity, offering plenty of immediate drinking pleasure while still retaining enough structure to continue developing for a few more years in good cellar conditions. Its appeal lies in the harmony between classic Saint-Julien restraint and the depth that comes with time.
Production
Léoville Barton is situated in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils provide excellent drainage and encourage Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen with intensity and finesse. The estate’s vineyards benefit from the maritime influence of the Gironde estuary, helping to moderate temperatures and preserve freshness in the grapes. Traditional vinification and careful élevage in oak are used to preserve the estate’s signature structure, aromatic clarity, and age-worthy balance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game, and mushroom-based dishes, as well as hard cheeses such as aged Comté or mature Cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for about 1 hour is recommended if the bottle is opened now, especially to allow the bouquet to fully unfold.
Producer
Léoville Barton has been part of the Barton family since 1826, making it one of the most historic family-owned estates in Bordeaux. Classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has built a reputation for producing reliably classic, long-lived wines that express Saint-Julien’s balance and finesse. Today, it remains highly regarded for its consistency, traditional winemaking, and strong standing among Left Bank collectors.
