Description
Léonce Bocquet’s Rully Les Cailloux 2020 is a fresh and expressive white Burgundy, combining fragrant floral notes with generous stone-fruit character. It offers an appealing balance between the richness of ripe fruit and a refreshing finish, making it an elegant introduction to the wines of Rully. The wine also carries the name of one of Burgundy’s most influential nineteenth-century wine merchants and négociants.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, the wine opens with aromas of acacia blossom, exotic fruit and honey. On the palate, flavours of ripe apricot add depth and softness, while lively freshness keeps the wine balanced and precise. It is approachable now, with the structure to develop further over the next few years as its fruit and floral nuances become more integrated.
Production
Rully is a Côte Chalonnaise appellation known for refined, fresh white wines, traditionally made from Chardonnay. The Les Cailloux vineyard name suggests a stony site, although detailed information on the exact terroir, harvesting methods and vinification for this bottling is not available. The wine’s combination of aromatic richness and freshness reflects the elegant style associated with white Rully.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Its floral aromas, apricot fruit and refreshing palate make it a natural partner for grilled or roasted fish, shellfish, poultry with a light cream sauce, fresh goat’s cheese and mildly spiced dishes. Decanting is not essential, although a brief aeration in the glass can help release its aromas.
Producer
Léonce Bocquet was a celebrated nineteenth-century Burgundy wine merchant and winemaker, regarded as one of the region’s most successful négociants. In 1889, he saved Château du Clos de Vougeot from decline by purchasing the estate and investing much of his personal fortune in its restoration. He also played an important role in distributing high-quality Burgundy wines throughout Europe, recognising the excellent storage conditions offered by the cellars of Beaune and developing an interconnected network of cellars for ageing and storing wine.
