Description

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2021 is one of Australia’s benchmark white wines, renowned for its precision, power, and age‑worthy elegance. Sourced from prime vineyard parcels in Margaret River, this Chardonnay marries vibrant citrus and stone fruit with beautifully integrated oak and layered complexity. The Art Series range is Leeuwin’s flagship line, celebrated for both its collectible wines and the original Australian artwork featured on each label, underscoring its place among the great Chardonnays of the New World.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Art Series Chardonnay is pale straw with a green hue, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is detailed and expressive: roasted cashew and subtle hazelnut sit alongside white peach, melon, lemon zest, and grapefruit pith, lifted by notes of mandarin peel, lime blossom, and a gentle creamy nougat. Hints of struck flint, wet stone, and fine vanilla spice reveal the careful use of French oak. On the palate, this is concentrated yet wonderfully controlled, with superb fruit density and a precise, linear structure. Ripe stone fruit and citrus – think nectarine, lemon curd, and tangy mandarin – are wrapped in a silken texture, supported by saline acidity and an undercurrent of minerality. The mid‑palate is powerful but never heavy, tapering into a long, persistent finish driven by citrus oil, toasted nuts, and fine‑grained oak. Built for the long haul, this vintage will reward patience, drinking beautifully now with air but capable of evolving gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining honeyed, brioche and hazelnut complexity over time.

Production
Leeuwin Estate’s Chardonnay vines sit in the cool maritime climate of Margaret River, where ocean breezes moderate temperatures and extend the growing season, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. The vineyards are planted on well‑drained gravelly and loamy soils over clay, contributing both intensity and mineral line. Fruit for the Art Series Chardonnay is hand‑harvested from some of the estate’s oldest, low‑yielding blocks, with meticulous bunch selection to ensure only pristine grapes make the cut. Fermentation takes place in high‑quality French oak barriques (a substantial portion new), often with indigenous yeasts, and a proportion of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to add texture and complexity while preserving freshness. Extended maturation on fine lees with regular bâtonnage builds the wine’s creamy mid‑palate and nutty nuances without sacrificing its signature drive and precision.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Chardonnay that shines with refined dishes. Think butter‑poached lobster, scallops, or king crab; roasted turbot or halibut with beurre blanc; or rich poultry such as roast chicken with tarragon, guinea fowl, or veal in a cream and mushroom sauce. It also pairs beautifully with truffled pasta, risotto with crayfish, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and mature Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C to allow the aromatics to express themselves fully without losing tension. Young bottles benefit from 45–60 minutes in a decanter or a large glass to open up; as the wine ages and gains tertiary complexity, more gentle aeration is sufficient.

Producer
Founded in the early 1970s as part of Margaret River’s first wave of pioneering estates, Leeuwin Estate quickly rose to prominence as one of Australia’s leading producers of premium Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Guided for decades by the Horgan family, Leeuwin helped establish Margaret River’s global reputation for elegant, cool‑climate wines, with the Art Series Chardonnay in particular becoming a touchstone for top‑tier New World Chardonnay. The estate has earned consistent critical acclaim, including numerous high scores and international awards, and its Art Series labels – each featuring commissioned works by prominent Australian artists – have cemented Leeuwin’s status as both a cultural and vinous icon of the region.
