Description
Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2008 is a classic, traditionally crafted red from one of the appellation’s most respected family estates. This vintage showcases the hallmark character of Châteauneuf: generous southern Rhône fruit wrapped in savory spice and wild herb complexity. It’s a wine that balances immediate approachability with enough structure to reward a few more years in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Le Vieux Donjon shows a deep dark ruby to plum color, still remarkably youthful for its age. The nose is expressive and inviting, with notes of kirsch, ripe plum, crushed blackberries and red cherries, layered with garrigue (thyme, rosemary, lavender), warm spices, cedar, and a touch of earth and leather.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with more depth than the vintage generally suggests, offering a core of sweet red and dark fruit framed by fine, slightly chewy tannins. Flavors of kirsch, black plum and dried raspberry mingle with hints of pepper, licorice, tobacco and smoked herbs. The finish is long, savory and harmonious, with the wine’s southern warmth balanced by a fresh, food-friendly acidity. While initially recommended to drink on the younger side, well-stored bottles can still show beautifully, with the wine now in a lovely, mature drinking window rather than for extended aging.
Production
Le Vieux Donjon farms classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir—sun-baked, stone-strewn vineyards with the region’s famous galets roulés (rounded river stones) over clay and sand, which store heat and help the grapes reach full ripeness. The red Châteauneuf is typically based on old-vine Grenache, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties, all harvested by hand to ensure selection in the vineyard. Vinification follows traditional methods: whole or partially destemmed bunches are fermented in concrete or stainless-steel vats, with gentle extraction to preserve fruit and structure, followed by aging—often in large, neutral foudres—to allow the wine’s terroir and natural complexity to shine without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This 2008 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural match for rustic, flavorful dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank, roast duck, herb-crusted pork, grilled beef with Provençal herbs, or game birds with mushrooms. It also works beautifully with rich stews (daube provençale), cassoulet, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F); if the bottle has a bit of age and sediment, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes helps it open up and clarify the aromas without stripping its subtle maturity.
