Description

Le Tertre Roteboeuf 2018 is one of Saint-Émilion’s most charismatic and sought-after wines, crafted in tiny quantities on a dramatic hillside (“tertre”) overlooking the Dordogne. This is a bold yet refined Bordeaux red that marries hedonistic richness with remarkable precision, a hallmark of the estate’s singular style. The 2018 vintage, born of a warm and generous growing season, is already lauded for its depth, plush texture and age-worthy structure, making this bottle a compelling choice for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Le Tertre Roteboeuf 2018 shows a deep, opaque ruby to garnet core with a vibrant, glossy rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose is immediately seductive: layers of ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry compote unfold alongside notes of violets, licorice, exotic spice, tobacco leaf, cedar, cocoa and a subtle, warm earthiness. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, with a seamless, almost creamy texture and beautifully polished tannins. Dark berry and stone-fruit flavors are intertwined with hints of mocha, sweet baking spices, graphite and a touch of savory game. The balance between richness, freshness and minerality is striking, with a long, resonant finish that lingers on notes of dark fruit and fine, spicy oak. While already impressive in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential; properly cellared, this 2018 should evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Le Tertre Roteboeuf lies on a south- and southeast-facing amphitheater of clay-limestone slopes on the eastern fringe of Saint-Émilion, a privileged terroir that concentrates sun and preserves freshness in the grapes. The vineyard is planted primarily to Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, all from low-yielding, old vines that are meticulously tended and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, François and Emilie Mitjavile favor a meticulous, artisanal approach: careful sorting of the bunches, long, gentle macerations and fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by extended aging in a high proportion of new French oak barrels. The result is a wine that expresses both the power of its warm vintage and the singular identity of this hillside terroir.

Food & Serving
Le Tertre Roteboeuf 2018 is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye, veal chops with truffle jus, slow-braised beef cheeks or game birds such as pigeon or duck. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, porcini risotto and well-aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open fully, with longer decanting (up to 3 hours) beneficial if you plan to enjoy it within the first decade of its life.

Producer
Le Tertre Roteboeuf is a small, cult estate in Saint-Émilion, brought to prominence by the visionary François Mitjavile, who took over the family property in the late 1970s. Under his guidance, the domaine became renowned for its unique, Burgundy-influenced philosophy in Bordeaux: low yields, late harvesting, and a focus on texture, aromatic complexity and terroir expression over pure power. Today, Le Tertre Roteboeuf is considered one of the most distinctive and coveted Saint-Émilion wines, often mentioned alongside the region’s top châteaux despite its modest size and artisanal scale. Its limited production, consistent critical acclaim and unmistakable style have secured its place as one of the Right Bank’s most characterful and collectible producers.
