Description
Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino V.V. 2017 in double magnum (3 L) is a profound, site-driven expression of Sangiovese from some of the estate’s oldest vines. The “V.V.” stands for “Vecchie Vigne” (old vines), signaling fruit sourced from parcels planted around 50 years ago, delivering extra depth, concentration, and complexity. Rather than producing a classic Riserva, Le Ragnaie chooses to bottle this single-vineyard old-vine Brunello to highlight territorial identity, showcasing a powerful yet refined side of Montalcino in a warm vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino V.V. is deep ruby with garnet reflections, showing the kind of intensity and brightness that old vines and a warm growing season can bring. The nose is layered and expressive: dark cherry and black plum are wrapped in notes of dried rose petals, baking spice, tobacco leaf, and hints of baked clay and warm earth, with subtle leather and cedar emerging as it opens.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Brunello with a beautiful interplay of richness and tension. Ripe, dark red and black fruits are framed by firm but polished tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and precise. Savory nuances of dried herbs, anise, and mineral-laced earth add complexity through the long, persistent finish. Despite the warmth of the 2017 vintage, the wine maintains balance and definition, thanks to old-vine concentration and careful cellar work. Already approachable in its youth with some air, it has the structure and stuffing to evolve gracefully for 12–20 years in a good cellar, gaining more tertiary notes of truffle, tobacco, and dried flowers over time.
Production
Le Ragnaie’s V.V. Brunello comes from high-quality, old-vine Sangiovese parcels in Montalcino, with vines around 50 years of age rooted in rocky, clay-limestone soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The estate is known for organic farming and meticulous hand harvesting, with strict selection of bunches both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. Fermentation typically occurs with indigenous yeasts in concrete or stainless steel, followed by a long maceration to gently extract color, tannin, and aroma from the thick-skinned Sangiovese berries. Aging takes place in large, traditional Slavonian or neutral oak casks, allowing the wine to develop complexity and texture without being dominated by new wood, preserving the purity of fruit and the clear expression of site and vintage.
Food & Serving
This Brunello V.V. is a superb match for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb shanks, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or roast game birds with herbs and root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, and truffle-infused dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Given its concentration and youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended, especially from a double magnum format, to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layers.
Producer
Le Ragnaie is a highly regarded Brunello estate in Montalcino, known for its high-altitude vineyards, artisanal approach, and emphasis on purity and terroir expression. Founded in the late 1990s, the winery quickly gained recognition for producing elegant, traditionally styled Sangiovese that stands out for its finesse and aromatic complexity, even in warmer vintages. The estate farms organically and bottles several distinct terroir expressions rather than relying heavily on Riserva bottlings, underscoring a philosophy rooted in place rather than classification. Today, Le Ragnaie is considered one of the reference producers in Montalcino, regularly earning strong critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors and serious Brunello enthusiasts.
