Description

Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2017 in magnum format is a striking, single-site expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most revered hillsides. Part of Le Ragnaie’s highly sought-after black label selection, this bottling showcases depth, tension and finesse in equal measure. With only 2,900 bottles produced, it offers a rare opportunity to experience a limited-edition Brunello from a premier cru–like site in a format ideal for long aging.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Montosoli shows a vibrant, medium-deep garnet core with brick-red hues at the rim, hinting at both concentration and evolving complexity. The nose is lifted yet intense, opening with dark cherries and wild berries before moving into cassis, blackcurrant leaf, and notes of tarry smoke. Subtle layers of dried rose, tobacco, and dusty mineral tones echo the hillside soils of Montosoli. On the palate, the wine is compact and tightly knit at first, then gradually fans out with impressive volume and drive across the mid-palate. Flavors of black cherry, plum skin and cassis are framed by savory hints of licorice, graphite, and a touch of smoky spice. The tannins are fine but firm, giving a polished grip that carries through a long, precise finish marked by crushed limestone and a persistent, dusty mineral character. In magnum, this 2017 has excellent aging potential: it will drink well now with a decant, but is best from around 2026 onward and should continue to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more.

Production
Sourced from the famed Montosoli hill in the northern sector of Montalcino, this Brunello benefits from a mix of limestone-rich and marl soils, cooler exposures and constant breezes that favor aromatic precision and elegant structure. Le Ragnaie works with low yields and meticulous, largely manual vineyard work to ensure optimal ripeness and selection of Sangiovese (Brunello) grapes at harvest. The fruit is hand-picked, carefully sorted, and fermented using traditional methods, followed by an extended maturation in large neutral oak, allowing the terroir’s character—its dark fruit, earthy tones and stony minerality—to take center stage. Bottled in magnum to enhance longevity and slow development, this cuvée is crafted as a pure, site-driven expression of Montosoli.

Food & Serving
This is a Brunello for the table, particularly well-suited to refined yet hearty Tuscan-inspired dishes. Pair it with bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù, or aged Pecorino Toscano to highlight its dark fruit and savory depth. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, roasted game birds, and rich mushroom preparations. Serve at 17–18°C (about 62–64°F); in magnum, give it a generous decant of 2–3 hours in its youth to allow the aromas to unfurl and the tannins to soften, shortening the decant to about 1–1.5 hours as it matures.

Producer
Le Ragnaie is a highly respected estate in Montalcino, known for its high-altitude vineyards and a philosophy that combines traditional Brunello craftsmanship with a precise, terroir-driven approach. Founded in the early 2000s, the winery quickly gained recognition for producing some of the most elegant and classically styled Sangiovese in the region, with a focus on purity, finesse and transparency of site. Their parcels span different altitudes and expositions, including the prized Montosoli hill, allowing them to craft distinct, single-vineyard bottlings such as this black label Brunello. Le Ragnaie’s wines regularly feature in top critic reports and have helped solidify the estate’s status as one of the leading modern benchmarks for Brunello di Montalcino.
