Description
Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2017 is a single-vineyard expression from one of Montalcino’s most revered hillsides, crafted in very limited quantities. This “black label” selection showcases the finesse and energy that Montosoli is famous for, wrapped in the depth and structure of a classic Brunello. With only 2,900 bottles produced, it offers a rare glimpse into a much-loved cru interpreted by one of Tuscany’s most terroir-focused producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Montosoli shows a luminous ruby garnet hue with a slightly deeper core, hinting at both concentration and elegance. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with dark red and black fruits—think blackcurrant, macerated cherry, and wild berries—layered with notes of tarry smoke, dried rose petals, hints of leather, and a dusting of crushed limestone. Subtle undertones of tobacco leaf, licorice, and savory herbs emerge with air, underlining its complexity.
On the palate, the wine is compact and focused at first, gradually broadening across the mid-palate as it gains volume and momentum. The tannins are firm but polished, giving a taut, architectural frame to flavors of dark cherry, blackcurrant, plum skin, and a delicate mineral dustiness. Hints of graphite, balsamic tones, and smoky spice carry through to a long, finely etched finish. Despite the warmth of the vintage, the wine retains a tonic, lively character, with fresh acidity that promises excellent evolution over time. This 2017 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 12–20 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and silkiness with cellaring.
Production
Montosoli is one of Montalcino’s most historic and celebrated crus, a hillside north of the town known for its higher altitude, cooler exposures, and particularly stony, limestone-rich soils that naturally limit yields and enhance aromatic precision. At Le Ragnaie, the Sangiovese (Brunello) grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only the purest fruit enters this limited cuvée. Vinification follows a traditional, minimalist path: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large tanks, gentle extraction to preserve finesse over power, and extended aging in large neutral Slavonian oak casks. This patient élevage allows the wine’s terroir-driven character—its dark fruit, smoky nuances, and dusty mineral backbone—to emerge with clarity and poise.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural match for richly flavored Tuscan-inspired dishes and fine cuts of meat. Pair it with bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb shank, game birds, wild boar ragù, or truffle-laced mushroom risotto; aged pecorino and other hard cheeses also work beautifully alongside its structure and savory depth. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is highly recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and open its layered bouquet.
Producer
Le Ragnaie is a highly respected, terroir-driven estate in Montalcino, founded in the late 1990s and quickly recognized as one of the region’s leading interpreters of Sangiovese. With vineyards among the highest in the appellation as well as prestigious sites like Montosoli, the estate has become known for crafting Brunellos of finesse, transparency, and classical structure. Organic farming, low yields, and a traditional approach in the cellar—favoring large casks, long aging, and minimal intervention—have earned Le Ragnaie consistent critical acclaim and a devoted following among Brunello enthusiasts. Their limited “black label” single-vineyard bottlings, such as this Montosoli, highlight the nuanced differences between Montalcino’s top terroirs and solidify the estate’s reputation as a benchmark producer in Tuscany.
