Description
Le Ragnaie Brunello di Montalcino 2017 in Double Magnum (3L) is a beautifully traditional expression of Sangiovese, presented in a format made for cellaring and generous sharing. This is a refined, quietly powerful Brunello that favors elegance, purity and aromatic lift over sheer weight. Drawn from some of the highest vineyards in Montalcino, it captures a cooler, more delicate side of the 2017 vintage, while staying true to the classic, ageworthy Brunello style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Le Ragnaie Brunello shows a luminous medium garnet hue with brick-tinged edges, signaling both its varietal purity and early evolution. The nose is finely etched and complex, offering wild red berries, dried cherry and redcurrant layered with dried lilac, violet, subtle leather, and earthy notes of underbrush and tea leaf. Gentle tones of dried Mediterranean herbs, mint and a hint of tobacco emerge with air, giving the wine a lifted, aromatic precision.
On the palate, this Brunello is supple and graceful rather than heavy, with a silken texture wrapped around a vibrant core of red fruit. Flavors of sour cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry are framed by savory hints of dried thyme, licorice, orange peel and a faint, mouthwatering saltiness. The tannins are fine-grained but firm, classically Sangiovese in their structure, ensuring the wine remains poised and focused through a long, nuanced finish with echoes of dried mint and earth. In Double Magnum, the slower evolution and larger volume offer excellent aging potential: this bottle format will easily reward 12–18 years in the cellar from vintage, developing deeper tertiary notes of porcini, leather and sweet spice over time while retaining freshness.
Production
Le Ragnaie sources fruit for its Brunello from some of the highest-altitude vineyards in Montalcino, with parcels reaching up to around 600 meters above sea level. These cooler, breezy sites, with a mix of galestro (marl), sandstone and clay-limestone soils, temper the warmth of the growing season and yield naturally low-yielding Sangiovese of great aromatic finesse and tension. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted to ensure only the healthiest clusters make it into the cuves. Fermentation traditionally takes place in cement or stainless steel with native yeasts, followed by extended maceration to gently extract color, tannin and complexity without heaviness. The wine is then aged in large neutral Slavonian oak casks for several years, a classic Brunello élevage that preserves purity of fruit, allows slow oxygenation and emphasizes the grape’s inherent elegance rather than overt oak influence, before being bottled—here in an impressive 3L Double Magnum—for further refinement.
Food & Serving
This refined Brunello is a natural partner for classic Tuscan dishes and simply prepared, high-quality ingredients. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with rosemary, braised beef or veal shank, game birds, or rich mushroom dishes such as porcini risotto and wild mushroom pappardelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano-Reggiano and truffle-infused specialties. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and structure. In Double Magnum format, the wine benefits from a generous decant of 1–2 hours when young to allow the delicate floral and herbal notes to fully unfold, while mature bottles can be decanted more gently to separate sediment and let the wine open slowly in the glass.
Producer
Le Ragnaie is one of Montalcino’s most respected traditionalists, known for championing high-altitude Sangiovese and a restrained, terroir-driven style. Founded and run by Riccardo Campinoti and his family, the estate takes its name from a historic hunting ground for birds, reflecting the elevated, wide-open vineyards that define its identity. Situated on some of the loftiest slopes of Montalcino as well as select lower-altitude plots, Le Ragnaie has been instrumental in showing how cooler sites can produce Brunello of extraordinary finesse, aromatic lift and aging capacity, even in warmer years. The winery’s commitment to organic farming, low yields and long aging in large neutral casks has earned it a place among the benchmark producers of the region, with its Brunelli regularly praised for their authenticity, elegance and adherence to the classic Sangiovese character that made Montalcino famous.
