Le Pupille Poggio Valente 1997 is a superb Tuscan red from Fattoria Le Pupille, crafted entirely from Sangiovese and bottled in a classic 0.75L format. With more than two decades of bottle age, it offers the kind of depth, nuance, and refinement that makes mature Sangiovese especially rewarding for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red core with garnet tones at the rim, reflecting its maturity. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding with ripe red and dark fruits, warm spice, tobacco, and subtle hints of vanilla and cocoa. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet polished, with Sangiovese’s natural acidity keeping the structure fresh and focused. The tannins are finely integrated, and the finish is long and persistent, marked by notes of chocolate, spice, and savory complexity. It is drinking beautifully now, though its balance and structure suggest it still has the elegance to hold for a while longer.

Production
Poggio Valente is sourced from Tuscany, where the region’s sun-drenched days and cooling influences help Sangiovese develop both ripeness and freshness. The wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes and was harvested in 1997, then vinified with the aim of preserving varietal character, structure, and aging potential. Extended bottle maturation has added complexity, softness, and tertiary aromas over time.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled or roasted red meats, game, braised dishes, and mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended, especially if opened after many years in bottle, to help the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic depth.
