Description
Le Pin 1990 is one of the most coveted wines ever produced in Bordeaux, a legendary vintage from an already mythical Pomerol estate. Silky yet immensely concentrated, it marries opulence with precision in a way that very few wines can match. This bottling is a rare opportunity to experience a benchmark right-bank Bordeaux at full, mature glory, yet still remarkably youthful in energy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Le Pin 1990 shows a deep, still remarkably vibrant ruby color with a hint of garnet at the rim—proof of its slow and graceful evolution. The nose is intensely expressive and layered, unfolding with fig, ripe blackberry, crème de cassis, and kirsch, intertwined with roasted coffee, mocha, sweet spice, and a whisper of dried herbs and truffle.
On the palate, this wine glides with an almost decadent texture, driven by its famously high glycerin levels. The tannins are velvety and perfectly integrated, creating a seamless, plush mouthfeel. Flavors of dark berry compote, black cherry liqueur, cocoa, and exotic spice roll across the palate with remarkable depth and length. Despite its age, it still “tastes like a teenager,” retaining fresh fruit, vibrancy, and a lively finish. Now fully mature, it is in a magnificent drinking window, with peak enjoyment from now through around 2025, provided bottles have been well stored.
Production
Le Pin is a tiny, jewel-like estate on Pomerol’s famous plateau in Bordeaux, rooted in gravel and sandy clay soils over an iron-rich subsoil that gives Merlot its unmistakable depth and perfume. The old vines are meticulously tended and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for strict selection of only the finest berries. In the cellar, Le Pin is vinified in small lots with great attention to detail, followed by aging in 100% new French oak barrels, which lends the wine its signature combination of richness, polish, and aromatic complexity while never overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
Le Pin 1990 is best paired with refined, simply prepared dishes that allow its complexity to shine—think roast lamb with herbs, veal tenderloin, truffle-infused dishes, pigeon or squab, or a classic beef filet with a delicate jus. It also marries beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decant gently for 1–2 hours before serving to let the mature aromatics unfurl, taking care to leave any sediment in the bottle.
Producer
Le Pin is one of Bordeaux’s most exclusive and sought-after estates, a tiny Pomerol property that rose from relative obscurity in the late 20th century to become a true cult icon. Founded and developed by Jacques Thienpont, the estate transformed a small, unassuming vineyard into one of the world’s most desirable wine addresses through obsessive attention to detail, ultra-limited production, and a relentless focus on quality. Situated on Pomerol’s prized plateau near illustrious neighbors such as Pétrus, Le Pin is renowned for producing some of the region’s most hedonistic, silky, and sensuous Merlot-based wines. Vintages like 1990 have cemented its reputation among collectors and critics as one of the greatest expressions of right-bank Bordeaux.
