Description
Le Pauillac de Latour 2020 is the refined, accessible sibling to the grand vin of Château Latour, crafted from younger vines and carefully selected parcels within the legendary Pauillac estate. It offers the pedigree and precision of one of Bordeaux’s most revered properties in a more open, earlier-drinking style. This cuvée captures the essence of Left Bank Cabernet—structure, depth and classic Pauillac character—while retaining a sense of immediate charm.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Le Pauillac de Latour 2020 shows a deep, youthful ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is expressive and elegant, with sweet red and black berries, ripe cassis, and blackcurrant leaf layered over notes of licorice, graphite, crushed violets and a touch of rose petal.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that lifts the dark fruit core. Fine, polished tannins bring a supple yet structured frame, carrying flavors of blackcurrant, ripe plum, subtle cedar, licorice and a savory mineral edge that is distinctly Pauillac. The finish is penetrating and persistent, combining youthful energy with Latour’s signature precision. While already approachable in its youth, the 2020 has the concentration and balance to evolve gracefully over 8–15 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in bottle.
Production
Le Pauillac de Latour is sourced from younger vines and select parcels within the Pauillac appellation that share the same great terroir DNA as Château Latour’s grand vin: deep gravel soils over a clay and limestone subsoil, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The maritime climate of the Médoc, tempered by the nearby Gironde estuary, allows for slow, even ripening, particularly in a high-quality year like 2020. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and strict selection of berries. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity rather than sheer power. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (including a proportion of one-year-old barrels from the grand vin), where it gains texture, complexity and subtle spice while maintaining the freshness and clarity of fruit that defines this cuvée.
Food & Serving
Le Pauillac de Latour 2020 is a versatile, food-friendly Pauillac that pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, entrecôte steak, duck breast, or veal chops with a red wine jus. It also works well with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gruyère. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, a short decant of 45–60 minutes helps open up the aromatic profile and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a gentler, shorter decant will be sufficient to remove any sediment and allow the bouquet to fully express itself.
Producer
Château Latour is one of the most iconic estates of Bordeaux and a First Growth of the 1855 Classification, renowned for producing some of the world’s most long-lived and profound Cabernet-based wines. Located at the southern end of Pauillac, bordering Saint-Julien, its vineyards occupy some of the finest gravel terroir in the Médoc, with a history of viticulture stretching back to at least the 14th century. Over the past decades, Latour has become a benchmark for meticulous vineyard management, low yields and rigorous selection, all aimed at expressing the purest form of its Pauillac terroir. Le Pauillac de Latour, the estate’s more approachable cuvée, allows wine lovers to experience the character and craftsmanship of this legendary property in a style that is earlier-drinking yet still firmly rooted in the Latour tradition.
