Description

Le Marchesine Franciacorta Secolo Novo Brut Millesimato 2016 is a refined vintage sparkling wine made from 100% Chardonnay using the traditional Metodo Classico. Sourced from the renowned La Santissima hillside in Cussago, it combines pronounced mineral freshness with the elegance and complexity gained from 54 months of lees ageing. First introduced in 1995, Secolo Novo represents the Biatta family’s long-standing pursuit of excellence in Franciacorta.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a bright straw-yellow colour with a fine, persistent bead and delicate perlage. Its expressive bouquet brings together toasted hazelnut, candied lemon and honey, complemented by subtle menthol and floral nuances developed during its extended maturation on the lees. On the palate, it is dry, slender and finely textured, with lively acidity balanced by a distinct saline-mineral character. The finish is clean, elegant and persistent, with the Chardonnay’s freshness supported by a gently creamy complexity. It is ready to enjoy now, while its structure and extended lees ageing should allow it to develop further complexity over the coming years when carefully stored.

Production
The Chardonnay grapes are grown on the slopes of La Santissima in Cussago, where high-density plantings and calcareous soils encourage concentration and pronounced saline-mineral character. The grapes are hand-harvested to preserve the integrity of the bunches, then gently pressed whole-cluster, with only the free-run juice selected. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperature using naturally occurring yeasts, while cooling prevents malolactic fermentation and preserves freshness. After bottling, the wine undergoes its secondary fermentation and matures on the lees for 54 months, enhancing its aromatic depth and creamy texture.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its lively acidity and saline finish make it an excellent match for oysters, shellfish, sushi, grilled fish and delicate seafood starters, while the notes of toasted hazelnut and honey also complement creamy risottos, soft cheeses and lightly truffled dishes. Decanting is not necessary; pour carefully into tulip-shaped sparkling-wine glasses to preserve the fine bubbles and allow the aromas to open.

Producer
Le Marchesine is a distinguished Franciacorta producer led by the Biatta family, whose commitment to quality has been passed down through five generations. The estate has played an important role in expressing the character of Franciacorta, particularly through long-aged Metodo Classico wines such as Secolo Novo. The cuvée has earned recognition from prestigious Italian wine guides, including Gambero Rosso, and is noted for its refined elegance, mineral precision and long finish.
