Le Macchiole, Toscana Scrio 2020

Le Macchiole Scrio 2020 is a distinctive, single-varietal Syrah from Bolgheri, showcasing the Tuscan coast through a more savoury and refined lens. Produced by one of the region’s pioneering estates, it reflects Le Macchiole’s long-standing focus on expressive single-vineyard wines and stands comfortably alongside the great names of the Bolgheri appellation, including Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, the wine offers an intense yet finely detailed bouquet of ripe blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, layered with violet, Mediterranean herbs, pepper and subtle spice. Hints of cocoa, liquorice and well-integrated oak add further complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, Scrio is full-bodied and concentrated, with silky tannins, vibrant freshness and an elegant, savoury character. Dark fruit is balanced by floral notes, spice and a gently mineral finish. The 2020 vintage is already approachable with decanting, but its structure and balance should allow it to develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years when stored in suitable conditions.

Production
The grapes are grown in Bolgheri on the Costa degli Etruschi, where wooded hills, vineyards and olive groves meet the moderating influence of the Mediterranean Sea. This combination of coastal light, warm days and cooling breezes helps Syrah achieve ripe fruit while retaining freshness and aromatic definition. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks over approximately 20 days, followed by around 13 months of maturation in tonneaux and conical-shaped oak eggs, with a small proportion also aged in ceramic vessels. The result is a wine that combines depth and structure with a notably pure expression of fruit.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C alongside roasted or grilled lamb, beef fillet, venison, wild boar ragù or richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses and Tuscan specialities such as bistecca alla fiorentina. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine’s dark fruit, floral notes and savoury complexity to open fully.

The estate was among the early pioneers of single-varietal and single-vineyard wines in a district traditionally associated with Bordeaux-inspired blends, and its work with Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot has earned it considerable international recognition. Today, Le Macchiole is regarded as one of Bolgheri’s benchmark producers, combining meticulous vineyard work with an individual, terroir-focused style.
