Le Macchiole, Toscana Paleo Rosso 2022

Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2022 is an iconic Bolgheri red from Tuscany’s Costa degli Etruschi, crafted predominantly from Cabernet Franc. Produced by one of the region’s pioneering estates, it reflects Le Macchiole’s long-standing focus on expressive single-varietal and single-vineyard wines, placing it among Bolgheri’s most distinctive and age-worthy bottles.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with youthful purple highlights, Paleo Rosso opens with an intense, refined bouquet of blackcurrants, blackberries and dark cherries, complemented by violets, Mediterranean herbs, graphite and subtle spicy oak. The palate is concentrated yet precise, combining ripe dark fruit with firm, polished tannins, lively acidity and a savoury mineral character. Elegant rather than heavy, it finishes long and persistent with notes of dark chocolate, herbs and cedar. The 2022 vintage is already compelling with decanting, but its structure and balance give it excellent cellaring potential. It should develop greater complexity over the next 10–15 years, and well-stored bottles may continue to evolve beyond that.

Production
The wine comes from Bolgheri, where vineyards benefit from the meeting of maritime influence, rolling hills, forested surroundings and well-drained soils. Le Macchiole’s vineyards are cultivated in the distinctive coastal terroir of the Etruscan Coast, with Cabernet Franc at the heart of this cuvée. Following harvesting at optimal ripeness, fermentation takes place in concrete tanks for approximately 20 days. The wine is then matured for 18 months in new French-oak barriques, adding structure and spice while preserving the variety’s aromatic intensity.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to come gently up to temperature. Decant for around 1–2 hours when drinking it young to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic layers. Its depth and freshness pair particularly well with grilled or slow-roasted beef, venison, lamb, game birds, truffle dishes, and mature hard cheeses.
