Le Macchiole, Toscana Paleo Rosso 2021

Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2021 is a distinguished Bolgheri red from one of Tuscany’s most respected pioneering estates. Made from Cabernet Franc, it reflects the maritime influence and mineral-rich soils of the Costa degli Etruschi, placing Le Macchiole among the region’s landmark producers alongside names such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The estate has been cultivating vineyards here since 1983, with Paleo standing as one of its signature wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Paleo Rosso shows a deep ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. The nose is expressive and layered, revealing dark berries, blackcurrants and plums alongside violet, Mediterranean herbs, graphite and carefully integrated oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet finely structured, with concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and firm, polished tannins. Notes of black cherry, cassis, spice and dark chocolate develop towards a long, persistent finish. The 2021 vintage offers both richness and freshness, with the structure to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed now after decanting, but will gain further complexity over the next 10–15 years, depending on storage conditions.

Production
The vineyards lie in Bolgheri, between the wooded hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the maritime climate, sunlight and varied soils create ideal conditions for Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested with care at optimum ripeness before fermenting for approximately 20 days in concrete tanks. The wine then matures for 18 months in new French-oak barriques, adding depth, spice and texture while preserving the wine’s distinctive Tuscan character.

Food & Serving
This structured red is an excellent match for grilled or roasted red meats, beef fillet, venison and lamb, as well as rich pasta dishes, mushroom preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when opening the wine young, to soften the tannins and allow its aromatic complexity to unfold.
