Le Macchiole, Toscana Paleo Rosso 2021

Le Macchiole’s Paleo Rosso 2021 is a landmark red from Bolgheri on Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast, a region celebrated for producing some of Italy’s most compelling Bordeaux-inspired wines. Built around Cabernet Franc, it reflects the estate’s pioneering approach to single-variety and single-vineyard expressions, placing it among the most distinctive wines of the area alongside icons such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, the wine shows impressive concentration and a refined, polished character. The nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, violets and Mediterranean herbs, complemented by subtle notes of cedar, spice and graphite from its oak maturation. On the palate, Paleo Rosso is full-bodied yet balanced, with layers of dark fruit, savoury herbal nuances and finely grained tannins. Fresh acidity provides energy and length, while the finish is persistent and mineral. The 2021 vintage has the structure to develop beautifully in bottle over the next 10–15 years, with proper cellaring, while already offering considerable depth and complexity.

Production
The vineyards lie in Bolgheri, between the wooded hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the maritime climate, Mediterranean vegetation and well-drained soils create excellent conditions for Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested by hand before fermentation lasting approximately 20 days in concrete tanks. The wine is then matured for 18 months in new French oak barriques, adding depth and spice while allowing the tannins to integrate.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as grilled or roasted beef, venison, lamb and slow-cooked game. It also works well with truffle dishes, mature hard cheeses and hearty Tuscan preparations. Serve at 16–18°C. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, particularly when opening a young bottle, to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s aromatic layers to unfold.
