Le Macchiole, Toscana Paleo Rosso 2020

Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2020 is a flagship Bolgheri red from one of the pioneering estates of Tuscany’s Costa degli Etruschi. Made primarily from Cabernet Franc, it combines the polish and power associated with the region’s great Bordeaux-inspired wines with Le Macchiole’s distinctive single-vineyard approach. Since its founding in 1983, the estate has helped establish Bolgheri as one of Italy’s most important fine-wine regions, alongside names such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with intense violet reflections, the 2020 Paleo Rosso opens with an expressive nose of blackcurrants, black cherries, blueberries and ripe plums, followed by floral notes, Mediterranean herbs, spice and subtle graphite. New French oak adds nuances of cedar, cocoa and sweet toast without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied, concentrated and finely structured, with firm yet polished tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish. Cabernet Franc contributes both freshness and savoury complexity, while the warm coastal climate brings generous, ripe fruit. This is an age-worthy wine that can be enjoyed now after decanting, but should develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years under suitable cellaring conditions.

Production
The vineyards lie in Bolgheri, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the wooded hills of the Etruscan Coast. The maritime climate, abundant sunlight, cooling coastal breezes and well-drained soils create ideal conditions for Cabernet Franc, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness. The grapes are harvested at careful maturity and fermented for approximately 20 days in concrete tanks. Paleo Rosso is then matured for 18 months in new French oak barriques, giving the wine additional structure, depth and aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as grilled or roasted beef, venison, lamb, wild boar ragù and Tuscan-style stews. It also works well with mature hard cheeses and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or truffles. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to rest and open in a decanter for around 1–2 hours. Younger bottles may benefit from the longer end of this range, while mature vintages can be decanted more gently to separate any sediment.
