Description
Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso 2020 is a benchmark Bolgheri red and one of Italy’s most distinguished expressions of Cabernet Franc. Produced on Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast, it combines the warmth and maritime influence of the region with the precision of a single-variety wine, placing Le Macchiole among the pioneering estates of the Bolgheri appellation. It is a powerful, age-worthy Super Tuscan with remarkable depth and refinement.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, with an intense, almost opaque core. The nose opens with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and plum, followed by violets, Mediterranean herbs, graphite, cedar and subtle spice from the oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, yet finely balanced, with vibrant acidity, polished tannins and a long, savoury finish. Dark fruit and mineral notes linger alongside hints of tobacco and dark chocolate. Although already impressive, the 2020 vintage has the structure to develop gracefully for 15–20 years or more under suitable cellaring conditions.
Production
The vineyards lie in Bolgheri, between the wooded hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea, where sandy and mineral-rich soils benefit from the region’s sunny climate and cooling maritime breezes. The Cabernet Franc grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand before fermentation in concrete tanks for approximately 20 days. Paleo Rosso is then matured for 18 months in new French oak barriques, giving the wine additional complexity while preserving its characteristic freshness and Mediterranean identity.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as grilled or braised beef, venison, lamb, wild boar ragù and roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses and earthy mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to breathe. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended when serving the wine young, while older bottles should be decanted carefully to separate any sediment.
Producer
Founded in 1983, Le Macchiole has played a significant role in establishing Bolgheri as one of Italy’s leading regions for elegant, internationally acclaimed red wines. The estate was among the area’s early pioneers of single-vineyard and single-variety wines, alongside such renowned neighbours as Tenuta San Guido and Ornellaia. Paleo Rosso is central to the winery’s identity: originally a blend, it became a pure Cabernet Franc in the early 2000s and is now recognised as one of Tuscany’s classic interpretations of the grape.
