Le Macchiole, Toscana Messorio 2021

Le Macchiole Messorio 2021 is one of Bolgheri’s most respected single-vineyard wines, crafted entirely from Merlot grown on Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast. It combines the richness and plush texture associated with the variety with the freshness, Mediterranean character and remarkable precision of Bolgheri. Alongside Sassicaia and Ornellaia, Le Macchiole has helped establish the region as a source of world-class fine wine, while remaining a pioneer of Italian single-vineyard expression.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, with an intense, almost opaque core. The nose is generous and complex, revealing ripe black plum, blackberry and blueberry alongside violets, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, cocoa and well-integrated notes of cedar and toasted oak. On the palate, Messorio is full-bodied and powerful yet finely balanced, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, silky tannins and a lively freshness that gives the wine lift. Hints of dark chocolate, liquorice, spice and balsamic herbs emerge through the long, persistent finish. The 2021 vintage has the structure and depth to develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years, while its polished fruit makes it enjoyable with careful decanting today.

Production
The wine comes from Le Macchiole’s vineyards in Bolgheri, between the coastal hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea, an area shaped by a Mediterranean climate, sea breezes and diverse soils that help preserve freshness in the grapes. Messorio is made from Merlot harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation. Fermentation lasts approximately 25 days in concrete and stainless-steel tanks, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French-oak barriques, adding depth and complexity while allowing the wine’s vineyard character to remain central.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, flavourful dishes such as grilled or roasted beef, venison, lamb and slow-cooked game. It also works well with truffle dishes, hearty ragù, mushroom-based preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for around 1–2 hours before serving to open the wine’s aromas and soften its youthful structure; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all.
