Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the 2020 Messorio opens with an intense and layered nose of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by violet, dark chocolate, sweet spices and subtle balsamic nuances. The palate is rich and concentrated, with a velvety texture, impressive depth and well-integrated tannins. Fresh acidity provides balance to the generous fruit, while carefully judged oak contributes notes of toast, spice and cocoa without overshadowing the wine’s character. Messorio is an age-worthy wine with the structure and concentration to develop beautifully over the next decade or more when stored in suitable conditions. With further bottle age, its fruit profile should gain additional complexity, revealing more savoury, earthy and mineral nuances.

Production
The grapes are grown in Bolgheri, along Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast, where the interaction between Mediterranean influence, coastal breezes, rolling hills and varied soils creates an especially favourable environment for Merlot. Le Macchiole has cultivated vineyards in the area since 1983 and was an early advocate of single-vineyard wines in Bolgheri. For the 2020 vintage, fermentation lasted approximately 25 days in concrete and stainless-steel tanks, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French oak barriques. The result is a wine that combines generous coastal fruit with structure, polish and ageing potential.

Food & Serving
Serve Messorio at around 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to acclimatise and open slightly. Its richness and refined tannins make it an excellent match for braised beef, roast lamb, game, mature cheeses and Tuscan dishes featuring herbs, mushrooms or slow-cooked sauces. Decanting for approximately one to two hours is recommended when drinking the wine young, both to soften its youthful structure and to allow its aromatic complexity to unfold.
