Le Macchiole, Toscana Messorio 2020

Le Macchiole Messorio 2020 is a landmark single-vineyard Merlot from Bolgheri on Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast. A pioneering expression from one of the region’s most respected estates, it demonstrates how Merlot can achieve remarkable depth, structure and Mediterranean character beyond its traditional French heartland. Alongside names such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia, Le Macchiole has helped establish Bolgheri as a world-class source of fine, age-worthy red wines.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, with the concentration and youthful intensity expected from a serious Bolgheri Merlot. The nose opens with ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, followed by hints of violet, dark chocolate, sweet spices and finely integrated oak. On the palate, Messorio is generous and powerful yet carefully balanced, combining rich dark-fruit flavours with polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, persistent finish. The 2020 vintage is enjoyable now with decanting, but its structure and concentration should allow it to develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years, or longer under suitable cellaring conditions.

Production
The vineyards lie in Bolgheri, between the wooded hills and the Tyrrhenian coast, where the Mediterranean climate, sea breezes and varied soils create ideal conditions for expressive, structured red wines. Messorio is produced from Merlot and fermented for 25 days in a combination of concrete and stainless-steel tanks. The wine then matures for 18 months in new French oak barriques, adding depth, spice and texture while complementing the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for richly flavoured dishes such as Tuscan beef, grilled or roasted red meats, wild boar ragù, venison and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, allowing the bottle to come up gradually in temperature. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine young, to soften the tannins and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
