Le Macchiole, Toscana Messorio 2019

Le Macchiole Messorio 2019 is one of Bolgheri’s most distinguished single-varietal Merlots, combining Tuscan character with the depth and refinement associated with the world’s great red wines. Produced by the pioneering Le Macchiole estate, it stands alongside the region’s iconic names while expressing a distinctly individual, vineyard-focused style. The wine reflects Le Macchiole’s early commitment to single-vineyard wines in a region that was still emerging on the international stage.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red with youthful purple highlights, Messorio 2019 presents an intense and layered nose of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, followed by notes of violets, sweet spices, cocoa and well-integrated oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with polished tannins, vibrant freshness and a long, savoury finish. The fruit is generous and powerful, yet balanced by the elegance typical of the Bolgheri coastal climate. This is a structured wine with excellent ageing potential. It can be enjoyed now after careful aeration, but will develop greater complexity over the next 10–15 years, with further bottle ageing bringing out notes of tobacco, leather, truffle and spice.

Production
Messorio is made from Merlot grown in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast between the Mediterranean Sea and the inland hills. The area’s combination of well-drained soils, sunlight, cooling sea breezes and significant day-to-night temperature variation helps the grapes achieve both ripeness and freshness. Fermentation takes place over approximately 25 days in cement and stainless-steel tanks, allowing for careful extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. The wine is then matured for 18 months in new French oak barriques.

Food & Serving
Its structure and intensity make Messorio an excellent partner for rich, savoury dishes such as grilled or braised beef, venison, lamb, game birds and Tuscan meat stews. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring truffle or earthy mushroom flavours. Serve at around 16–18°C, ideally after decanting for 1–2 hours to open the aromas and soften the youthful tannins.

Founded in 1983, Le Macchiole is one of the pioneering estates of Bolgheri’s Costa degli Etruschi. Located in a landscape of wooded hills, vineyards and olive groves between the coast and the Mediterranean hinterland, the estate helped establish the reputation of the area’s high-quality, terroir-driven wines. Le Macchiole is particularly recognised for its dedication to single-vineyard and single-varietal bottlings, including Messorio, and is often mentioned alongside celebrated Bolgheri estates such as Tenuta San Guido and Tenuta dell’Ornellaia.
