Le Macchiole, Toscana Messorio 2018

Le Macchiole Messorio 2018 is one of Bolgheri’s most distinguished single-vineyard Merlots, combining the richness of the grape with the freshness and maritime character of Tuscany’s Etruscan Coast. Produced by the pioneering Le Macchiole estate, it stands among the region’s benchmark wines alongside names such as Sassicaia and Ornellaia, while expressing a distinctly individual identity.

Tasting Notes
Deep and opaque ruby in colour, the wine opens with an intense, layered bouquet of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by violet, Mediterranean herbs, spice and subtle toast from oak ageing. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet finely balanced, with supple tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, persistent finish marked by dark fruit, cocoa and savoury nuances. Messorio is already impressive for its depth and polish, but its structure and concentration give it considerable ageing potential. Stored in good cellar conditions, the 2018 vintage should develop further complexity over the next 10–15 years or more, with the fruit gradually giving way to additional earthy and savoury notes.

Production
The vineyards lie in Bolgheri, between the wooded hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the coastal climate, Mediterranean light and varied soils provide an ideal setting for expressive, elegant red wines. Messorio is made from Merlot sourced from a single vineyard, with the grapes carefully selected and harvested at maturity. Fermentation takes place over approximately 25 days in a combination of concrete and stainless-steel tanks, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French oak barriques.

Food & Serving
Its generous fruit, polished tannins and savoury depth make Messorio an excellent match for grilled or roasted beef, venison, lamb and rich braised dishes. It also pairs beautifully with hearty Tuscan cuisine, such as wild-boar ragù, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully, particularly when enjoyed in its youth.
