Description
Le Guédard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Zero Dosage “Vignes Mon Grand-Père” is a characterful grower Champagne that puts purity and terroir front and center. Crafted entirely from dark-skinned grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) and bottled with zero dosage, it offers a bone-dry, incisive expression of its chalky Champagne origins. Named in honor of the winemaker’s grandfather, this cuvée pays tribute to old family vines and the traditions passed down through generations in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Blanc de Noirs shows a luminous, pale gold color with copper highlights, animated by a fine, persistent bead of bubbles. The nose is precise and intense, opening with ripe orchard fruits—think baked apple and pear—alongside wild strawberries, redcurrant, and hints of citrus zest. Subtle notes of brioche, toasted almonds, white flowers, and chalky minerality emerge with a bit of air, underlining its grower-Champagne pedigree.
On the palate, the Zero Dosage style immediately stands out: this is taut, dry, and laser-focused, yet supported by the generous texture typical of Pinot Noir and Meunier. Flavors of crunchy red apple, lemon peel, and stone fruit mingle with red berry tones and a saline, chalk-inflected backbone. The mousse is fine and creamy, balanced by vibrant acidity that drives a long, mouthwatering finish. Enjoy it now for its energy and precision, or cellar for 3–5 years to allow the fruit and autolytic notes to knit together and gain further complexity.
Production
Sourced from family parcels in the heart of the Champagne region, “Vignes Mon Grand-Père” reflects vines rooted in the region’s classic chalk and limestone soils, which lend tension, elegance, and a distinct mineral signature to the wine. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly healthy bunches, a crucial step for a pure Blanc de Noirs style. In the cellar, traditional Champagne methods are followed: gentle pressing of whole clusters, temperature-controlled fermentation, and maturation on the lees to build texture and complexity. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle and extended lees aging before disgorgement, and, importantly, no dosage is added, allowing the terroir, the fruit, and the natural acidity to speak without embellishment.
Food & Serving
This ultra-brut Blanc de Noirs is a versatile partner at the table, particularly well-suited to dishes that highlight freshness and texture. Try it with oysters, crab, scallop ceviche, or simply prepared white fish to echo its saline edge, or pair with sushi, sashimi, and tempura for a vibrant contrast. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, hard cheeses, and lightly spiced poultry dishes, where its structure can stand up to richer flavors. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or in a decanter designed for sparkling wine can help the aromatics open up, but avoid prolonged or vigorous decanting to preserve the fine mousse.
Producer
Sanchez – Le Guédard is a grower-producer estate in Champagne, where the same family that tends the vines also crafts the wines—an increasingly prized model among Champagne enthusiasts looking for authenticity and terroir expression. Working on a small scale compared to the major houses, the domaine focuses on parcels that have been in the family for generations, including the vines celebrated in the “Vignes Mon Grand-Père” cuvée. Their approach emphasizes careful vineyard work, low yields, and thoughtful, minimally interventionist winemaking to capture the character of each plot. As part of the new wave of artisanal Champagne producers, Sanchez – Le Guédard has earned a quiet but growing reputation among sommeliers and collectors for precise, terroir-driven wines that showcase the depth and versatility of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in Champagne.
