Description
Le Gallais, part of the renowned Egon Müller zu Scharzhof estate, presents this mature 1988 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese from the Saar in Germany. A beautifully aged example of a classic late-harvest Riesling, it combines concentrated fruit, refreshing acidity and the complexity that comes with more than three decades of bottle maturation.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, indicative of its long development in bottle. Its mature bouquet opens with ripe peach, apricot and citrus, complemented by the layered, honeyed nuances typical of an aged Riesling Spätlese. On the palate, it is generous and full-bodied, balancing luscious sweetness with vibrant acidity. The finish is long, harmonious and pleasantly persistent. Properly stored, this mature Riesling may continue to evolve, although it is already at an appealing stage for drinking.
Production
The Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard is situated in the Saar, a cool-climate part of the Mosel region known for steep slopes and slate-rich soils that help retain heat while contributing mineral character. Spätlese refers to grapes harvested at a late stage of ripeness, resulting in naturally concentrated fruit and sweetness. Specific details regarding the 1988 harvest and vinification are not provided, but the wine has benefited from extensive bottle ageing since its vintage.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to unfold in the glass. Its balance of sweetness and acidity makes it an excellent partner for foie gras, pâté, spicy Asian cuisine, aromatic poultry dishes and blue cheese, while its mature character also suits elegant desserts based on fruit or stone fruit. Decanting is not usually necessary; if sediment is present, carefully stand the bottle upright and pour gently, or use a short, cautious decant shortly before serving.
Producer
Le Gallais is a historic Saar estate associated with Egon Müller zu Scharzhof, one of Germany’s most respected names in fine Riesling.
