Description

Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Rosé de Saignée Premier Cru Extra Brut is a serious, characterful rosé that bears almost no resemblance to the typical “tinted” pink Champagne. Crafted from red grapes left to macerate gently on their skins, it draws its vivid color and depth of flavor naturally, rather than from a dash of still red wine. From an old-vine Premier Cru parcel in Vertus, farmed organically for over two decades, this cuvée is a benchmark for authentic, terroir-driven rosé Champagne.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Rosé de Saignée shows a luminous, deep salmon to pale ruby hue, much more intense than most rosé Champagnes, with a fine, persistent bead and delicate mousse. The nose is expressive and vinous, opening with wild strawberry, raspberry and morello cherry, followed by blood orange, rose petals and pomegranate. With air, notes of rhubarb, subtle spice, chalky minerality and a hint of brioche and dried herbs emerge, reflecting both its terroir and long lees aging. On the palate, it is dry and precise (Extra Brut), yet beautifully textured, with the structure and presence of a fine Pinot-based still wine wrapped in the energy of Champagne. Juicy red berry fruit, cranberry, and pink grapefruit are layered over a core of chalk and saline minerality, supported by vibrant acidity and a refined, almost tactile, phenolic grip from the saignée method. The finish is long, mouthwatering and delicately savory, suggesting red citrus zest and crushed stones. While delicious now, this non-vintage cuvée has the backbone to age gracefully for 5–8 years from release, gaining more complexity, subtlety and autumnal, tertiary notes with time in bottle.

Production
This Champagne comes from a single, very old Premier Cru parcel in Vertus, in the Côte des Blancs, where Pinot Noir vines share the chalky, limestone-rich soils with the exceptionally rare Pinot Gris in Champagne. Farmed according to certified organic and biodynamic principles for more than 20 years, the vineyard is managed with low yields, meticulous canopy work and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to ensure concentration and purity. The rosé is made by the traditional saignée method: whole grapes are gently pressed and left to macerate on their skins until the desired color, flavor and tannin have been drawn out, rather than being blended with red wine. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, often in oak or neutral vessels, and the wine is aged extensively on its lees to build texture and complexity, before being bottled with a very low dosage to let the Premier Cru terroir speak clearly.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic rosé Champagne that pairs beautifully with food, moving confidently from refined starters to more substantial dishes. Try it with tuna or salmon tartare, grilled prawns, sushi and sashimi, charcuterie, duck breast with cherries, roast poultry, or mushroom and truffle dishes; it also works superbly with flavorful cheeses like aged Comté or semi-soft washed-rind styles. Serve well-chilled, but not icy, at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to allow its aromatics and texture to open up. A gentle decant in a chilled carafe or simply pouring it into large white wine glasses and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help the wine reveal its full complexity.

Producer
Pierre and Sophie Larmandier steward the Larmandier-Bernier estate, one of the most respected grower-producers in Champagne and a reference point for terroir-focused wines from the Côte des Blancs. Based in Vertus, the family has been working their Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards for generations, but it was the decision in the late 1980s and 1990s to move toward organic and then biodynamic viticulture that truly set them apart. Today, they are renowned for their meticulous vineyard work, low-intervention winemaking, indigenous yeast fermentations and minimal dosage, all in service of expressing the nuances of their chalk-rich sites. Their wines, especially the single-vineyard cuvées like this Rosé de Saignée, are frequently cited by critics and sommeliers as among the most transparent, pure and age-worthy Champagnes in the region.
