Description

Larcis Ducasse 2009 is a benchmark Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most lauded vintages, capturing the opulence and precision that make Right Bank wines so sought after. This 75 cl bottle offers a deeply expressive, terroir-driven red that balances lush fruit with classical structure, making it ideal for collectors and enthusiasts alike. The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux is already regarded as historic, and Larcis Ducasse is consistently highlighted as one of the standout performers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Larcis Ducasse shows a deep garnet core with just a touch of brick at the rim, reflecting its evolution while retaining impressive concentration. The nose is captivating and complex: vibrant kirsch and crème de cassis are layered with notes of dried roses, Black Forest cake, and dark cherries, underpinned by hints of black tea, cigar box, menthol, and subtle spice. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a refined but tightly knit structure. Ripe, grainy tannins frame a core of sweet red and black fruits, with chocolate, licorice, and a savory, tea-leaf complexity unfolding with air. There is notable freshness that lifts the richness, leading into a long, perfumed finish that echoes rose petals and dark berries. Already beautifully expressive, this 2009 still has further aging potential; properly cellared bottles should continue to evolve gracefully for another decade or more.

Production
Château Larcis Ducasse is perched on the prized côtes of Saint-Émilion, where limestone and clay-limestone soils on south-facing slopes provide exceptional drainage, natural freshness, and ideal ripening conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Vines are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal maturity and preserve the nuances of each plot in this classified growth. In the cellar, the fruit is sorted carefully and vinified in temperature-controlled tanks, often with a focus on gentle extraction to retain finesse rather than aggression, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to polish the tannins and integrate the complex aromatics without overshadowing the character of the vineyard.

Food & Serving
This 2009 Saint-Émilion shines alongside classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with mushroom jus. It also pairs beautifully with truffle risotto, confit duck, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and soften, especially if enjoyed within the next few years.

Producer
Château Larcis Ducasse is an historic Saint-Émilion estate, long recognized for its exceptional terroir on the limestone slopes just southeast of the village. Over the past few decades, the château has become one of the reference names of the appellation, benefitting from meticulous vineyard work and a more terroir-focused approach in both vinegrowing and winemaking. Its elevated position and prime soils have earned it a strong reputation among Bordeaux aficionados, and in modern vintages like 2009, critics frequently cite Larcis Ducasse as one of the appellation’s overachievers, offering grand cru classé quality that reflects both its heritage and its ongoing pursuit of excellence.
