Description
Château Lagrange is one of Saint-Julien’s most respected Third Growth estates, and the 2019 vintage captures everything that makes this Left Bank classic so appealing: structure, precision, and polish. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, it brings together power and elegance in a style that has made Lagrange a benchmark name in Bordeaux since its 1855 classification.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep garnet core with youthful ruby highlights. On the nose, expect blackcurrant, ripe plum, cedar, graphite, violets, and a subtle touch of spice and tobacco from careful oak aging.
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with firm but refined tannins, fresh acidity, and layers of dark berry fruit, cassis, and earthy minerality. Petit Verdot lends extra color and spice, while Merlot softens the frame and Cabernet Sauvignon drives the structure. The 2019 vintage has strong aging potential and should reward several years in bottle, evolving beautifully over the next decade or more.
Production
Lagrange is based in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly soils and excellent drainage favor Cabernet Sauvignon and help produce wines with finesse and longevity. The grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then vinified with a focus on preserving fruit purity and terroir expression, followed by maturation in oak barrels to build texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for one to two hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and tannins to open up.
