Description

Carruades de Lafite 2001 is the distinguished second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, offering a finely tuned expression of Pauillac elegance at a more approachable level than the grand vin. In this classic Left Bank vintage, Carruades captures the hallmark Lafite signature: precision, finesse, and beautifully integrated structure. It’s a mature Bordeaux that now shows its full complexity, ideal for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate refined, terroir-driven claret.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2001 Carruades de Lafite shows a translucent, evolved garnet core with brick-like reflections at the rim, reflecting its graceful development in bottle. The nose is refined and nuanced rather than showy, with notes of red and black cherries, redcurrants, and cranberries interwoven with pencil shavings, cigar box, dried roses, and a distinct graphite and wet-stone minerality. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied Pauillac with focus and poise rather than power. The fruit leans towards vibrant red berries and tart cherry, layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, and subtle earthy undertones. The tannins are fine-grained and largely resolved by now, giving a silky, almost velvety texture that carries through to a persistent, savory finish. Acidity is fresh but integrated, lending lift and clarity to the wine’s mature flavors. This vintage is at or near its peak drinking window, with enough structure to hold for a few more years, but the emphasis now is on savoring its developed bouquet and tertiary complexity rather than long-term cellaring.

Production
Carruades de Lafite is sourced from parcels on the Lafite Rothschild estate in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide excellent drainage and naturally low yields—ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir here imparts the classic Pauillac profile of graphite, cassis, and refined tannins. Grapes are harvested by hand, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only healthy, optimally ripe fruit is used. In the cellar, Carruades is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, typically with a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Merlot (and small portions of Cabernet Franc and/or Petit Verdot depending on the vintage). The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often including a proportion of used barrels from the grand vin—allowing for subtle oak integration while preserving purity, finesse, and the estate’s distinctive mineral-cedar character.

Food & Serving
This mature Pauillac is an excellent match for classic French cuisine and refined dishes where subtlety is appreciated. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef tenderloin, duck breast, mushroom risotto, or veal chops in a light jus. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda, or well-matured Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silkiness. Given its age, decanting for about 30 minutes to 1 hour is recommended to remove any sediment and allow the delicate bouquet to open, though overly extended decanting is unnecessary as the wine is already fully evolved.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most revered names in Bordeaux and the wider wine world, classified as a First Growth in the historic 1855 Classification. Situated in Pauillac, on the Médoc’s Left Bank, Lafite has centuries of winemaking history and has long been associated with nobility, fine dining, and the highest standards of claret. Carruades de Lafite is the estate’s second wine, created to showcase the Lafite style in a slightly more approachable, earlier-drinking form while still drawing on the same exceptional terroirs and meticulous vineyard and cellar practices. Lafite’s consistent pursuit of elegance, balance, and longevity has made it a benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines globally and a cornerstone of any serious Bordeaux collection.
