Description
Lafite Rothschild 2020 is a commanding, precision-crafted Grand Vin from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates. This is a deeply layered, modern-classic Pauillac that marries power with extraordinary finesse, offering immediate charm as well as long-term cellar potential. In 2020, Château Lafite has crafted a wine that many critics see as richer and more profound than the already outstanding 2019.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lafite Rothschild 2020 shows an opaque, garnet-purple core with violet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The bouquet is intense and refined: pure blackcurrant (cassis) at the forefront, woven with notes of black truffle, pencil shavings, cedar, violets and a subtle graphite minerality.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, polished and multi-layered, with a broad, enveloping mid-palate and a deep core of ripe dark fruit. Sleek, ultra-fine tannins feel almost velvety, giving a seamless texture that carries flavors of cassis, black plum, exotic spice and a whisper of cacao and tobacco leaf. The naturally high pH (around 3.94) contributes to a supple, approachable profile, suggesting this wine may remain open and generous rather than passing through a long, closed phase. While already remarkably harmonious in youth, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over several decades.
Production
Sourced from the famed gravelly terraces of Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Lafite Rothschild 2020 reflects a terroir of deep gravel over limestone and clay that is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, with a touch more Merlot from the Carruades plateau than in 2019, adding plushness and aromatic complexity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness, then rigorously sorted to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the Grand Vin. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve its character before gentle extraction, blending and maturation in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to refine the wine’s structure and amplify its natural elegance.
Food & Serving
Lafite Rothschild 2020 is a superb partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled dishes and hard, aged cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the bouquet to unfold. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours will help open the aromatics and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter, more gentle decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most illustrious names in the world of wine and a First Growth estate as classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank, Lafite’s gravelly vineyards have been renowned for producing great wines since at least the 17th century, long before the estate came under the ownership of the Rothschild family in 1868. Over the decades, Lafite has become a benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon–based Bordeaux, celebrated for its combination of aromatic finesse, longevity and understated power. Its wines regularly feature among the most sought-after and highly rated in the region, reinforcing Lafite’s status as a global reference for classic, ageworthy claret.
