Description

Lafite Rothschild 2019 is a benchmark Pauillac and one of Bordeaux’s most compelling wines of the vintage, uniting classical structure with striking finesse. Impeccably balanced and quietly powerful, it showcases the estate’s signature elegance in an especially sensual, expressive style from the very first pour. With 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and moderate alcohol, it stands beside 2010 and 2016 as one of the great modern Lafites—yet is the most immediately charming of the trio.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lafite Rothschild 2019 shows a deep, vivid garnet core with a subtly purple rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is captivating and layered: pure blackcurrant and blackberry intertwine with ripe cherry, violets, cigar box, pencil shavings and a discreet halo of warm spice. With air, more complexity unfurls—cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and a delicate floral lift. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, velvety and effortlessly composed. A silken, almost plush attack gives way to a concentrated, finely etched mid-palate, where dark berries, cassis and black cherry are framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe, vibrant acidity. The finish is long, perfumed and precise, leaving lingering notes of violets, cedar and subtle spice. While already disarmingly seductive in its youth, this 2019 has the structure and energy for decades of evolution; expect it to drink beautifully from around 8–10 years after the vintage and to continue developing complexity for 30 years or more in a proper cellar.

Production
Château Lafite Rothschild sits on some of the most revered terroir in Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, with deep gravelly soils over limestone that are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 grand vin is dominated by 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the estate’s focus on this noble variety, with the balance traditionally made up of complementary Bordelais grapes. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested in small lots at optimum ripeness, allowing for rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the cellar. Vinification follows parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled vats, preserving the character of each plot before blending. The wine is then matured in French oak barriques, predominantly new, where it slowly gains texture, aromatic complexity and harmony while retaining the purity and finesse that are hallmarks of Lafite.

Food & Serving
Lafite Rothschild 2019 is a natural match for refined dishes that mirror its depth and elegance. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, game birds like pigeon or duck, or slow-braised veal and beef dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the bouquet to unfold. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–3 hours helps soften the tannins and release the aromatics; with extended bottle age, a gentler decant shortly before serving is advisable primarily to separate the wine from any sediment.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most illustrious names in the wine world and a First Growth of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, long considered a reference point for Pauillac and for Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines globally. With a history that stretches back centuries, Lafite has been associated with royalty, statesmen and collectors, and has played a key role in establishing Bordeaux’s reputation for fine wine. Under the stewardship of the Rothschild family since the 19th century, the estate has become synonymous with grace, longevity and meticulous vineyard care. Today, Lafite Rothschild is widely regarded as a benchmark for classically styled, ageworthy Bordeaux, consistently producing wines that unite power with precision and an unmistakable sense of place.
