Description
Château Lafite Rothschild 2003 is a rare and highly sought-after expression from one of Bordeaux’s most legendary First Growth estates. Sourced from Pauillac, this vintage combines the estate’s trademark finesse and structure with the richness and concentration of the warm 2003 growing season. A wine with deep historical pedigree and global prestige, it remains one of the most iconic names in fine wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet core with mature ruby reflections at the rim. The bouquet is nuanced and refined, offering blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, tobacco, dried herbs, and subtle notes of spice, leather, and earth.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with polished tannins, remarkable poise, and a long, elegant finish. The 2003 vintage brings added ripeness and texture, giving the wine a more generous profile while retaining Lafite’s hallmark precision. It is drinking beautifully now, though well-stored bottles can continue to evolve for many years, gaining further complexity.
Production
Produced in Pauillac on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, the estate’s gravelly soils over clay and limestone provide excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve exceptional depth and aromatic clarity. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, reflecting both the estate’s classic style and the conditions of the vintage. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, with meticulous selection before traditional vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel and oak vats, followed by extended aging in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck breast, and truffle-based recipes. It also complements hard, aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening now to allow the aromatics to unfold and the structure to soften.
Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates and has been a benchmark of fine wine for centuries. Ranked among the original First Growths in the 1855 Classification, it is especially revered for its elegance, longevity, and consistency. The estate has long held a leading position in Pauillac and is widely considered one of the world’s most distinguished wine producers.
