Description
Château Lafite Rothschild 2001 is a classic first-growth Pauillac that combines grace, precision, and longevity in the unmistakable style of one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it offers the poise and detail collectors look for in great Lafite, while already showing the refinement that makes this vintage especially approachable.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep garnet core with emerging brick-red highlights, reflecting its early maturity while retaining impressive density. The nose is refined and layered, with aromas of cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, and subtle hints of dried flowers and truffle. On the palate, it is elegant rather than powerful, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish that speaks clearly of Pauillac terroir.
The 2001 vintage has the structure to continue evolving beautifully for many years, though it is already drinking well now with time in bottle and proper aeration. Expect further development toward more tertiary notes of leather, forest floor, and spices as it ages.
Production
Lafite Rothschild is situated on some of the most prized gravel soils in Pauillac, where excellent drainage and deep root penetration help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve remarkable finesse and aromatic complexity. The vineyard is carefully managed with meticulous attention to plot selection and fruit quality, and the grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. Vinification is carried out with precision to preserve purity and elegance, followed by aging in French oak barrels that support the wine without overwhelming its balance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as beef fillet, roast lamb, duck breast, venison, and truffle-based preparations. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and refined mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to help the wine open and soften its tannins.
