Description
Lafaurie-Peyraguey 2001 is a beautifully expressive Sauternes from one of Bommes’ historic 1er Cru Classé estates, offering the classic richness of the region with remarkable freshness and precision. The long, dry autumn of the vintage allowed noble rot to develop superbly, resulting in a wine that combines depth, elegance, and exceptional aromatic clarity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden colour with amber reflections at the rim. The nose is layered and complex, opening with dried apricot, candied orange peel, saffron, beeswax, roasted pineapple, and a subtle balsamic thread of cedar and spice.
On the palate, the wine is rich but never heavy. Mature acidity carries the sweetness with ease, while the texture is silky and enveloping, unfolding through honeyed citrus, exotic fruit, and a long, mineral finish. It is already highly rewarding to drink now, yet still has many years of graceful ageing ahead.
Production
The blend is built around Sémillon, typically about 90%, supported by small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. In 2001, the grapes were harvested in several selective passes to ensure only perfectly botrytised berries were picked, preserving purity and concentration. Fermentation took place in barriques, partly new oak, followed by around 18–20 months of maturation in barrel before bottling.
Food & Serving
This wine is a classic match for blue cheese, foie gras, and fruit-based desserts such as tarte Tatin or apricot tart, but it also works beautifully with roasted poultry in a rich sauce. Serve slightly chilled at around 8–10°C, and decanting is generally not necessary unless the bottle shows significant sediment or you wish to open it well in advance.
Producer
Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is one of the historic names of Sauternes and was classified as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. Based in Bommes, the estate has long been admired for producing wines that balance power, perfume, and finesse, and it remains a benchmark for the appellation. The 2001 vintage stands out as one of the estate’s more refined and enduring expressions.
